Is too much Exercise Making you Fat?

Posted Feb 05 2012 11:45am
Hey sweetpeas,

Okay just to warn you, this a long wordy post – gotta happen sometimes :)

Today I’m just having one of ‘those days’. I just can’t seem to snap out of my unhappiness despite attempting a bit of retail therapy this afternoon. I even had a huge massive big lie in – waking up at 11am! But today it seems is ‘Nicky is sad day’. I’ve been down a lot recently to be perfectly honest. I try not to go on about it to people and keep the thoughts to myself. But sometimes I figure I’ve got to get my feelings out somewhere because they’re just getting bigger and bigger inside me.

I’ve been majorly struggling with my body image and weight. My weight is the highest it’s been in my entire life. And all I can think is ‘I’m fat’, which according to the BMI scale I am not. I am in the middle of the healthy BMI range. But in my mind, that is big. And the feelings just won’t go away. Every. single. day. I just look at myself in disgust. I’ve been avoiding going out so much. I’ve just been going to the gym and coming back home as soon as possible to avoid people seeing me. I feel ugly. And like a blob.

This probably hasn’t been helped by my recent stomach problems which now I have figured out as they caused me to gain weight. But since starting my new diet, yes a lot of my symptoms have gone away. But my thighs are still huge. It’s all I see. Big thighs. And my stomach – um what the hell?! WHY is there fat doing there in my lower abdomen?! I’ve always had a flat stomach as I’m naturally a ‘pear’ shape storing my weight mostly around my hips and thighs.

I admit, I have tried reducing my calorie intake whilst still exercising. But nothing happened. If anything I gained a couple of more pounds. What the hell was going on with my body?! I was getting so frustrated at myself. Why won’t that extra bit of fat just shift itself dammit?! I eat healthy, lots of fruit and veg, pretty clean foods in general, exercise well – 6 times a week and yet this was happening.

And then today I read something that made me realise. It was some kind of book whilst I was out shopping about ‘clean eating’ etc which I basically do most of the time anyway. Then a read I part about exercise and the woman who was a fitness trainer said that as soon as she gets clients saying that they want to lose weight and can’t despite exercising 6 times a week, she tells them to reduce it to 3 cardio days and increasing yoga/pilates. And the reason why is because these people were producing too much cortisol from over-exercise.

So why can’t people lose weight despite exercising more?

TOO MUCH EXERCISE! Exercise is an essential part of maintaining long-term health and weight control. However, there is in fact such a thing as doing too much exercise, or exercising too intensely. Exercise is hormonally depleting, especially for women over 40.

If exercise is experienced as stressful or you overtrain, this can stress the adrenal glands. Adrenal glands make cortisol in response to stress. When there is too much cortisol release, the body goes into the “save” mode and will retain weight, especially around the midsection. This is one of the most tricky subjects for people who are healthy eaters, exercise intensely, and are frustrated by lack of weight loss or even weight gain despite all their efforts.

You have to exercise smarter, not harder. For example, exercise programs that include weight-lifting will build muscle mass, which in turn raises the overall metabolic rate. This makes a person burn more calories, even at rest! In other words, it’s not just about burning calories by exercising harder. Yoga and pilates are also great forms of exercise that are great for the body as well as the mind. If your best efforts at weight loss are not working well, you may be over-exercising.

NOT ENOUGH FOOD! How counterintuitive! Too often people think that if they reduce their calorie intake they will lose weight. These days, people are learning quickly about this mistake. All the “trainers-to-the-stars” are writing books promoting the importance of healthy snacking and eating five to six times per day.

Think of your metabolism like a furnace — if you don’t keep fuel in the furnace, the fire will die down and go out.

Here is the heart of why diets don’t work — when you don’t eat enough, your metabolism goes into “save” mode. Human bodies are designed this way, to withstand and survive starvation conditions. Feeling hungry may mean you are in this kind of counter-productive metabolic state.

So, it’s not your fault — eating less in this way will not lead to weight loss!

So how did I start to recognise that this may be my problem?
From My Experience:

Because fat in the midsection contain the greatest amount of cortisol receptors, fat is created and stored in the midsection. So you get belly fat, love handles, and inability to fit into clothes through the midsection. You will see a pendulous abdomen and a sagging abdomen.

I have been going to the bathroom non-stop in the night.

I feel constantly fatigued and look washed out and drained.  I also have brain fog. It is hard to think and remember simple things during the afternoon.

I feel out of breath while climbing stairs when there is no reason I should be. I work out and are not physically debilitated yet I experience being out of breath doing simple physical activities.

In the afternoon I always feel sleepy and have just been cuddling myself under a blanket.

I have been adding more salt to my food, wanting salty food like pretzels and crackers, salted edamame beans. The imbalance of the fluids in the body now causes a craving for salt and sharp cheese.

As a further result of the potassium-sodium imbalance, part of the chain reaction involves the inability to absorb calcium. The calcium, since it is not absorbed and used by the muscles and bones is urinated out and/or deposited on the organs.

This causes bursitis, heel spurs, arthritis, tendonitis, arteriosclerosis, calcium deposits in the kidneys, and twitching of the muscles.

Then there is excessive worry and impatience. I have been worrying about everything and anything which is totally exhausting

I have increased sensitivity to foods and food combinations hence the reason why I have become intolerant to foods.

Excess cortisol has made thigh muscles weak making it harder to climb stairs.

So think you have the same problem? How do You Reduce Cortisol levels?

At least 7 hours of deep sleep. Don’t drink caffeine in the afternoon or stop drinking caffeine totally.

Sleep earlier rather than wake up later. Staying up later and being tired is what causes the cortisol in the first place. Sleeping after this defeats the purpose. Sleeping earlier before your body is stressed, eliminates the cortisol in the first place.

Protein oats topped with PB&J = balanced breakfast

Have plenty of protein and water rich carbohydrates for breakfast.

This is the point where cortisol levels are highest, other than during intense exercise and intense stress.

By eating protein and carbohydrates, it stimulates insulin which mitigates cortisol!

Insulin is also the hormone that gets glucose and protein into the muscle cells, but only when the cells are receptive to it. There are only two times when the muscle cells are highly receptive to insulin: After sleep and right after intense exercise.

By not eating breakfast, you cause more cortisol to be released, you have a sugar crash in the afternoon that you do not recover from, you destroy your lean muscle, you increase belly fat and just all around feel crappy.

Sugar and the insulin swings are stressful on your body. When insulin takes your blood sugar away, you cells starve. That is stressful.

Hunger is stress. Organize so that you have a snack or something to eat at least every 3 hours.

Exercise at the right intensity. If you do cardio 6 times a week, reduce it to 3 and incorporate more less intense forms of exercise including walking, yoga, pilates or swimming.

If you have pain or an injury, it will stress your adrenals. The same is true for infections. If you are injured or ill – rest.

Reduce other types of stress in your life. I think this is obvious. Getting more organized, and saying no to things that overload your system emotionally, physically and mentally.

But, I understand that this can be a hard thing to do. Do the best you can. It is worth it!

Have you ever realised you’ve been stressing your body by exercise?

How do you keep your body at a healthy and happy weight?
