Iodine 101: Are You Getting Enough?

Posted Aug 14 2012 12:00am

Pink Sea Salt Iodine is an essential trace mineral required by the body for the synthesis of the thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) to ensure proper functioning of the thyroid gland.

In fact, a lack of iodine can lead to an enlarged and overworked thyroid gland (known as goiter), gouty arthritis (uric acid build up in joints), fatigue, weakness, depression and weight gain.

Since Iodine is most concentrated in sea vegetables, yogurt, cow’s milk (58.1% Daily Value), eggs (18% DV), strawberries (8.6% DV), mozzarella cheese (6.7% DV) and even fish and shellfish (seafood) – you can see how plant-based diets may run low in this micronutrient.
