On Saturday my amazing boyfriend Kyle asked me to marry him and I said YES!!! It was a whirlwind of a weekend and I think it’s going to take me 2 posts to share it all!
Before I tell you all the juicy details about the proposal, I think I should introduce Kyle a bit more.
Kyle is 3 years older than I am and therefore was already in college when I moved to Indiana my sophomore year in high school. He grew up in a town about 10 minutes from my town and was pretty well known over there, so I had heard of him. His sister is 2 years younger than I am and I knew her. There were also quite a few girls in my school who had a crush on Kyle and so I knew who he was. I would occasionally see him at parties because his best friend had a brother my age. But none of that mattered because we never really talked until I went to Butler in Indianapolis for college.
In the fall of my freshman year, Kyle called me one day to tell me he was coming to Indianapolis for the weekend. I didn’t really understand why he was calling me, but I was excited to see him that weekend. We hung out and became friends but didn’t go on our first date until Easter weekend of 2007- my freshman year.
I remember how nervous I was to hang out with him one on one for the night! I thought he was the coolest guy ever and I was immediately obsessed with him! Shortly after our first date, we were boyfriend/girlfriend but kept the relationship pretty casual.
I stayed in Indianapolis that summer and he came up to visit me almost every weekend. But by Thanksgiving we still had a pretty casual relationship and I was getting antsy. I felt like we weren’t moving forward and so I broke it off with him. In reality, I was head over heels for that boy but he just wasn’t ready for a serious relationship. He was changing career paths and had spent all of his high school and college years in a super serious relationship and so I think he just wanted to chill out.
I tried to date other guys but I couldn’t get over Kyle! Even though we were ‘broken up’ we talked on the phone every day. Finally in March, Kyle came to Indianapolis and told me he was ready to be a boyfriend and even though I tried to tell him he was too late, I was so excited to get back together. Since then (March 2008) we’ve been two peas in a pod. He told me he loved me in St. Louis that summer.
That fall I studied abroad in England for a semester. Even though I was across the globe, we never went a day without talking.
He became close with all my girlfriends and came to visit Butler all the time.
He supported my craziness during applying to medical school.
He was there 100% during my first 2 years of med school when I was a MESS!!! As an orthopedic PA, he taught me the shoulder and knee exam. He let me look in his eyes a million times when I was learning to do an ophthalmic exam. He lets me listen to his heart. He argues with me about physiology and new treatments we’ve read about.
We’ve been in a long distance relationship for all 5 years of being together, but it never feels like we’re far apart.
He loves science as much as I do and teaches me new things every day.
We’ve travelled to New York.
We’ve gone scuba diving in Honduras.
I’m obsessed with his family.
I respect him and look up to him more than anyone else in my life. He makes me a better person. And I can’t wait to be his wife!
