There are scientific ways to fight kidney disease with diet. This article talks about recent research and gives tips on what to do to stop kidney disease from progressing with the diet.

Causes of Kidney Disease Over 200 million people worldwide (26 million in the United States alone) have some form of kidney disease . Kidney disease, or chronic kidney disease (CKD) to be exact, is a progressive loss of kidney function. 50% of the time, this is caused by high blood pressure (HBP) or Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes . Other causes of chronic kidney disease are autoimmune disorders, cystic diseases, and genetic defects.

Most of the time chronic kidney disease damages both kidneys if nothing is done to stop it. This can lead to stage 5 kidney disease which leads to kidney failure. This serious condition can result in death. The reason is because the kidneys play a critical role in removing toxins from the blood, as well as making hormones that are crucial for normal body function, making urine and controlling blood pressure.

Two Kidney Research Takeaways According to two new articles of research presented at the 2013 Kidney Week, a diet high in acid load is directly related with an increased risk of losing kidney function.

One study is of almost 1,500 adults with chronic kidney disease taken from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III. Main researcher Tanushree Banerjee, Ph.D., at the University of California in San Francisco, and fellow researchers proved that a high dietary acid load led to a faster progression from chronic kidney disease to kidney failure.

This is one of the first pieces of research on the direct connection of acid foods and progression to failing kidneys in a nationally cohort study. Kidney failure developed in 311 (20.9%) participants, with an average of follow ups being 14 yrs. The people with the highest diet acid load were 8.56 times more common and those with the middle dietary acid load was 3.8 times more common to suffer kidney failure than people with the lowest diet acid load.

In the other piece of research, a Japanese team led by lead researcher Eiichiro Kanda, M.D., of Tokyo Kyosai Hospital, also discovered a correlation between high diet acid load and the progression of chronic kidney disease. The main result of their study, which included almost 250 elderly chronic kidney disease patients (average age of 70.6 years), was a 25% drop in eGFR or starting dialysis. The study showed that people with the high diet acid load were twice as likely to have kidney failure as those with the lower diet acid load.

What does this mean? It is important to consume a high alkaline diet , low in dietary acid. Following is a list of amazing alkaline diet foods that are excellent in stopping the progression of kidney disease:
