It’s kind of ironic that I’m writing this post today being that it feels like my head weighs a ton, my ears are clogged, and I have a sore throat.
Luckily, I had a flu shot before Michael was born, so this shouldn’t be anything more than an annoying cold.
And that leads me to the main subject of this post… the flu.
Did you know that you can be exposed to flu germs from up to 6 feet away? That means, the person behind you in line at the grocery store or a co-worker sitting across from you during a meeting can infect you.
Being that the flu is particularly awful this year, I’ve compiled some tips to help you and your loved ones stay well.
Get a flu shot. Once you have the shot, it can take up to two weeks for the immunity to take place, so the sooner you get your shot…the better.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze to avoid spreading germs to others.
Wash your hands regularly.
Disinfect areas of your home where germs are known to fester, such as the kitchen sink and bathroom.
Avoid contact with those who are sick. For instance, only visit doctor’s offices that have a “Well Waiting Area”. Wait there if you have to see a doctor for a routine check-up/well visit to avoid those who are there due to illness.
Eat yogurt. Some researchers think that the bacteria found in yogurt can actually stop viruses from binding to tissue.
Boost your immune system by eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetables.
Eat lots of garlic. Not only will this keep all of those germ-infested people from wanting to come near you (kidding, of course), but garlic can actually boost your immune system.
Drink red wine. Nope. This isn’t a mistake. Some studies have shown that the resveratrol found in red wine can prevent flu cells from replicating.
If you’re not into alcohol, sip some chamomile tea to help eliminate bacteria.
Eat spicy foods to alleviate congestion and keep your immune system strong.
I guess this means that I need to make myself a big bowl of yogurt sprinkled with minced garlic and red pepper flakes- which I’ll wash down with a glass of red wine.

I am SO paranoid about the flu now! I’ve never gotten the flu shot before because I was sort of against it (I feel like everyone I know has gotten sick from it) but now Matt and I are rushing to get them. There’s a major shortage up here but I just found a Walgreens that is getting a delivery later today and the guy nicely agreed to hold 2 for me. Just so scary with a baby, I really should have changed my mind sooner! Fingers crossed we stay flu free until the immunity kicks in Hope all is well with you and your Michaels!
Yup, I’ve gotten a flu shot for about the last 6 years or so, and the only time I’ve gotten the flu was the first year, but I think it was some freakish strain my nephews gave me when visiting them in Chicago. I am a crazy hand washer, so I think that’s definitely one of the keys to avoiding it. Other than that I’m not sure how I manage to avoid it, but I’ll keep doing whatever I’m doing since I haven’t had it in a while!
I have had my flu shot. I use avoidance, hand washing, hand sanitizing, use the dishwasher, use the hot cycle on the wash machine, and just keep myself healthy. I hope you feel better sweetie:) Happy Weekend!!!
