Saturday morning, the hubs-to-be and I woke up craving fresh, fall air & foliage so we put on our sneakers, packed a couple of water bottles, grabbed a picnic lunch and took a mini-road trip to escape for the day. We drove 2 hours northwest of Chapel Hill to Hanging Rock Park , a little gem of a place with some great hiking trails and beautiful scenery.
We’ve had a lot on our plates since he got back from Spain in mid-August. A day free of work, emails, phone calls and deadlines was just what we needed.
The park is named after this massive, hanging rock – which was apparently the place to be on such a gorgeous fall day.
Hanging Rock was our first stop but definitely not our last. We got off the beaten path a bit and took some smaller, less traveled trails all around the park.
I even found my own private hanging rock to perch on for a minute or two since the real one was occupied with tourists.
After a major push up one of the mountains, we stopped for a late lunch with an incredible view.
Bagel sandwiches might be my happiest hiking lunch ever because they’re packed full of fresh veggies and are incredibly filling fueling. Close to 900 feet of vertical for this = completely worth it. I’d do it every day if I could!
4 hours and 8 1/2 miles later, we were happily exhausted and excited to get back to the car for the drive home – which was also gorgeous.
The payoff view was actually looking back on the place we hiked to and ate lunch together.
As we made our way home, Rob and I came up with our top 5 reasons why we love hiking:
Question of the Day: What do you love about a long hike in the woods?
