Higher IQs Linked to Drug Use?

Posted Nov 15 2011 5:10pm

Well, apparently, you all like my boyfriend better than me. Luckily, I love him so you’re off the hook. The response to Matty’s first post was unreal! Thank you for the sweet comments and kind words. You made Matty feel right at home in Kale land and made me so proud to have you as readers. You are all amazing!  :-D

So, now that my last two exams are done and final two assignments are handed in…. “ Guess who’s back? Back again? “ You’re stuck with me now. Don’t worry, though, Matty will return!

Breakfast

Last night, I slept over my friend Kristin’s apartment and we had day two of our study sleepover. Eventually, our brains got tired and we watched The Sing Off before heading to bed. This morning, we woke up refreshed and ready to study – but not without proper fuel!

I fixed myself a bowl of Nature’s Path Flax Plus cereal and some pineapple. We munched and studied before calling it quits. I love having a study buddy, especially Kristin. Our sarcastic senses of humor power us through it all! What are friends for, right?

Lunch

After back-to-back exams, I was a bit discouraged. Both exams were extremely difficult and to be honest, I’m not sure of how well I did. As a result, all I wanted to do was chill out, enjoy some lunch, and watch some television. I munched on my midday meal while watching an episode of What Not to Wear. Nothing like a healthy dose of Stacy and Clinton to cure your post-exam blues!

I know that you’re probably sick of seeing falafel balls…but I’m craving them like crazy lately! I riffed off of Sunday’s lunch and had a salad with the usual veggies, hummus, and a crumbled falafel ball. On the side, I had a few more falafel balls dipped in some organic ketchup.

Daily Musings

After my third and final class of the day, I came back here to finish up this post. I’m off to kickboxing and then to our Student Government Assocation’s (SGA) weekly meeting, which I am scheduled to cover for my News Writing course. I’ll be getting out pretty late so I’ll be taking along a new-to-me source of replenishment:

For those of you that aren’t familiar, Vega is a line of high-raw/vegan plant-based bars, protein powders, and essential fatty acid (EFA) oils designed to improve and enhance athletic performance. The line is created by Brendan Brazier , a vegan ironman triathlete and author of the Thrive books. I read Thrive two summers ago and absolutely loved it.

I’m a huge fan of Vega Vibrancy bars but this was my first time trying the vanilla-flavored Vega Sport powder. It contains 20 grams of protein and impressive amino acid profile, both of which are ideal for pre- and post-workout fuel. I will be posting a full review on Thursday!

Kids With a High IQ More Likely to Use Drugs

I came across an article at TIME.com today that piqued my interest, and thought it would serve as a good conversational platform for us!

According to a new study from the U.K., people with high IQs are more likely to smoke marijuana and take illegal drugs. This particular study followed 7,900 participants that were born in early April 1970. The participants’ IQs were measured at ages 5, 10, 16, and 30. By age 30, 35% of men and 16% of women said they had smoked marijuana in the previous year. They tended to score higher on IQ tests than non-drug users.

So, why did this pattern occur? ”People with high IQs are more likely to score high on personality scales of openness to experience,” said James White, the study’s lead author. “They may be more willing to experiment and seek out novel experiences.”

I found this article particularly interesting because we’re constantly told in the media that taking drugs makes you “dumber,” especially with all of the Above the Influence commercials on T.V. While drugs are obviously not the “smartest” choice for obvious health reasons, it doesn’t mean that the drug user is not intelligent. The more liberal side of me enjoyed seeing that stereotype addressed in this article.

In case you’re interested, you can read the rest of the article here .

Stay lovely,
Heather
