Sciatica is a painful condition thousands of people suffer from. The shooting or stabbing pain typically begins in the lower back and radiates down one or both legs. In severe cases, the patient finds him or herself unable to walk. Even moderate cases can impact one’s ability to function. Understanding Sciatica and discussing your treatment options with a qualified physician is often the first step towards a more mobile and pain free life, but there is another option: herbal Sciatica relief.

A physician is likely to prescribe a course of anti-inflammatory drugs as well as prescription pain medication. These medications do tend to alleviate the pain; however, many patients are simply unwilling to accept the many side effects these drugs can have. Pain free movement traded for sleepiness, constipation or other side effects simply isn’t worth it. These patients turn to natural remedies for relief.

Before turning to herbal Sciatica relief, many first try physical therapy, yoga, acupuncture or chiropractic care. These treatments do indeed provide the patient with a degree of relief, however in many cases; the problem is not fully resolved, simply eased. It is a better idea to combine these therapies with herbal remedies and thereby address the problem from two fronts.

Herbal remedies have recently seen resurgence in their popularity. Seen by many as a healthy alternative to over-prescribed medications, there is an herbal remedy for almost every condition and Sciatica is no different. In fact, there are several different herbs that can be taken to address this often debilitating problem.

Many of the herbal Sciatica remedies are aimed at reducing inflammation; Garlic milk, Chamomile and Stinging Nettles, in various preparations work to help the body reduce inflammation and pressure against the Sciatic Nerve. Others seek to address tension that may be causing some of the pressure. St. John’s Wort, Borage and Valerian Root all have excellent calming properties. Finally, Yarrow, Horsetail and Mustard Seed can be used in a compress preparation to both relieve the pain of Sciatica and to increase circulation.

Herbal Sciatica remedies are an excellent way to address a painful and often continuing problem. To determine what will work best for your particular cases, it is important to see a physician and rule out serious medical conditions as an underlying cause. You may find you receive the best relief from a combination of herbs and physical therapy.

Exercises for sciatica are a major part of recovery; be that as it may it’s just one element or part of it. Even if sciatica exercises are obviously essential to both short and long term recovery, some popular exercises for sciatica may actually make your condition worse.
