Healthy Vegan Friday & Healthy Vegan Challenge

Posted Mar 22 2013 10:22am

Good morning (I almost just typed “Food” morning) and happy Friday to you! :)

Vegan book giveaway:

Thank you again to everyone who left lovely, thoughtful comments for my Defiant Daughters book giveaway . From environmental reasons, to health concerns, to the love of our companion animals, and to the hope to alleviate the suffering of all animals, your words on what inspired you to consider vegetarianism, veganism, and living a plant-based life were so varied and interesting and I appreciate you sharing them.

The random number generator selected comment #35 from Sarah R. who said:

“Hi Carrie! I was inspired to become vegan after learning about how detrimental factory farming is to the environment and the animals. I couldn’t call myself an environmentalist when the industry that I was supporting with my food choices was just about the worst thing possible for the environment! That combined with the fact that heart disease runs in my family makes it a no brainer for me to live a vegan lifestyle.”

I didn’t mention in my review of Defiant Daughters that all of the proceeds from sales are benefiting the fantastic non-profit, animal rights organization, Our Hen House .

Healthy Vegan Challenge Update:

Would you believe that come Sunday, we are halfway through our ? You can read the list of goals I put together in this post , and I thought I’d give you a little update on my progress.

So far, I’ve met my goals to avoid oil and some of the foods that trigger me to overeat including dried fruit, sweeteners, and cacao. The second and third weeks were probably the toughest in dealing with my sugar cravings. It didn’t take long before they diminished, though, and I feel that my tastebuds now are much more sensitive to the natural sweetness in fruit and I have really lost that drive for excess sweetness or dessert after a meal outside of fruit. The chocolate craving is still very much there, however, and it will be interesting to see if it lessens during the second half of the Challenge.

The Challenge has also been significant in forcing me to take a hard look at how my emotional state affects my food choices. It has been very helpful for me to make this commitment to a healthier outline because then when I am tired or upset by something going on in my life, I don’t resort to eating unhealthy foods to console myself because I don’t want to break the “rules” I set for myself for these eight weeks. In other words, I feel like I am not nearly as inclined to use food for comfort, although this is an ongoing goal for me and a tough, tough habit to break.

If you are part of our Facebook group that I created to support the Challenge, then you know that many people have lost weight during this past month. For me, weight loss was not a primary goal, I have been more focused on managing my cravings and making better food choices. In that way, I feel confident saying that I am reaching my goals and I feel stronger and healthier because of it (woo-hoo!).

Lastly, I would say that what I have learned from the Challenge so far is how important it is to have social support in trying to achieve any type of goal. Whether it is from this blog, the Facebook group, my husband, or other friends, I get so much motivation from connecting with others who want to be healthier and I have learned to be less shy in asking for help, so thank you to all of you who have supported me.

It’s not to late to join this Challenge! We have four weeks left and there is no better time to set your own goals for living a healthy life. Read this post , set your goals, make the commitment and start making changes.

I hope you have a great weekend. I have a fun day planned on Sunday when I’m going whale-watching with some friends. I have been working really hard lately and am looking forward to a day off and hopefully seeing some beautiful marine animals.
