Healthy Travel

Posted Jul 28 2011 2:37pm

Hello friends!

Today I’m leaving for a 10 day trip to one of my favorite places in the world.

Home, aka Seattle. ( source )

I’m so excited to have some time to relax, spend time with family and friends, and run on my favorite trails at home. Plus the last 3-4 days will be spent with my extended family at the beach, so it should be a lovely trip.

When it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, traveling can be hard (that’s what she said). Changes in routine present unexpected challenges and there is only so much planning you can do. Read more about my tips for healthy travel in a guest post I did on Losing Weight in the City here .

For this trip, I prepared in the following ways:

1. Woke up and did 5 miles in the park right away to get my run in. It will hopefully help me relax and rest on the long flight, and that way I don’t have to stress about getting a longer run in tomorrow since I’ll probably be tired.

Step one: get sweaty.

Step two: Buddy will gladly lick the sweat off you (gross).

2. Ate a healthy breakfast (part one: multigrain bread and sunflower butter, part two: smoothie in a bowl and 1/2 c. cereal) and packed healthy snacks for the plane (mini luna bars, sunflower butter sandwich, trail mix, food should taste good  multigrain chips).

3. Packed all my running gear, signed up for a 5k on Saturday with my siblings, and made a run date with my cousin for next week! Scheduling runs ahead of time means I won’t make excuses or get distracted.

4. Asked friends for recommendations for yoga/cross training classes. Since I haven’t lived in Seattle for over 3 years now, I’ll rely on friends to help me figure out where to sweat.

Other plans/goals to keep my week healthy: drink lots of water, sweat once a day, go to the store early in the week to get healthy foods for the week, get lots of sleep, and keep drinking to a minimum. (or at least keep drinking lots of water Smile)

Now if only this guy was coming with me.

See you in Seattle!

How do you stay healthy while traveling?
