Healthy Fat May Prevent Hearing Loss

Posted Jul 16 2010 11:46am

Yet another reason to make sure your diet contains healthy fat. A recent study on hearing loss and omega 3 fats caught my attention as hearing loss is rampant in my family on my father’s side. Apparently, higher intakes of omega-3 fats may reduce the risk of age-related hearing loss (also known as presbycusis ) in people older than 50 years.

Hearing loss is actually the most common sensory disorder in the U.S., so any means of prevention is important. Furthermore, hearing aids are very expensive and not all insurance companies cover the costs. Plus you can’t get them wet so people frequently damage them by forgetting to take them out when showering or swimming.

Previous studies have shown that folic acid can reduce presbycusis in certain frequencies and that vitamins C and E, betacarotene and magnesium can also prevent both temporary and permanent hearing loss at least in animals .

Omega 3 fats have already been shown to reduce heart disease, depression, symptoms of depression and even bone loss. Preventing hearing loss is yet another reason to eat your salmon, cod or halibut, walnuts, flax and chia seeds on a regular basis.

Be Well,

Carolyn
