Healthy Eats on Vacation

Posted Aug 28 2013 7:30am
What does a fit couple eat on vacation?  A lot of things that we don't normally eat.  We're on the 20% of our 80/20 diet and I'm sharing some of it on today's What I Ate Wednesday round up.
I apologize for the odd look of the blog.  There is a problem with my designer's photobucket account and I'm hoping it's resolved soon.  Thanks for reading and ignoring that.  If you are looking for a particular page or post you can use the search feature on the right side.

Kyle and I are heading home now from a wonderful vacation in Siesta Key, Florida.  We stayed at a beach condo of one of his client's and it's been a perfect trip.
One of the highlights was realizing that I was 2.5 miles away from a Trader Joe's.  I've visited TJ's in Anaheim and Atlanta, but I've only been able to buy pantry foods.  I loved their reasonably priced produce and frozen yummies. It was Kyle's first TJ's visit and he was excited and nervous all at once! We even got free chocolate almond samples in the store.
Here's our goodies...both healthy and not-so-much!
We went not once but twice to Big Olaf's Ice Cream on the island.  This night we both got vanilla soft serve with heath.  The other trip Kyle got mint Oreo and I had heath bar frozen yogurt.  I just couldn't pull the trigger all the way to the real stuff.  The fro-yo satisfied my sweet tooth.
We had a relaxing Sunday breakfast at the Broken Egg cafe.  Kyle loves eating breakfast out and after a quick 15 minute wait we had a cool table on the patio.  I had a really hard time deciding what to get.  I'm not a big breakfast out fan like Kyle.  He wanted a breakfast burrito AND a pancake, so I chose to get the sampler and give him my pancake.  Check out this odd presentation.
That's 2 scrambled eggs, ham, fruit, and a whole wheat chocolate chip pancake.  Eggs with melted chocolate bits were still pretty good.
My favorite night was our "kids meal" night.  Since we do normally eat clean, french fries and chicken tenders don't often make the menu.  We used Trader Joe's frozen goods for a dinner of baked fries and chicken tenders with a side spinach, heirloom tomato, and avocado salad.
We also had a traditional "beach pizza" night.  The pizza we ordered was a New York style Margherita.  Kyle added chicken on half and it was fried chicken tenders...odd?
Overall I think having our own kitchen has helped us strike a balance between treats and healthy eats our bodies need.  We had 2 wonderful dinners out that I'll share in a future post.

What's your favorite vacation treat?
Have you been to Trader Joe's?

Love and Big Olaf,
Carissa & Kyle
