Today I’m hungry for balance. Balance is something we all seem to strive for in life and it’s crucial in relationships.
My fiancé got inspired recently to become more active. He’s taking Krav Maga classes twice a week and he just purchased some new running shoes. My healthy eating habits and fitness routine inspire him from time-to-time but I make it a point not to push too hard on him since we eat differently and keep different sleeping schedules. I eat a vegetarian diet about 80% of the time + occasional salmon or tuna and he eats a rather meat-heavy diet. I’m an early riser and he loves to snooze.

We are accustomed to making separate meals or variations of meals for dinner and I get my workouts done in the morning when he’s still asleep. We make our differences work to our benefit. We’ve decided to run our first half marathon together this December 5th in Dallas and I’m so excited to share the experience of training and running with him as we start our marriage this fall.

We ran our longest distance together this morning – a steady 5K. I was so impressed that he powered through it since he hasn’t been running in almost 3 years! I loved having him out there with me and the fact that I got him out of bed pretty early. I’m excited to see our endurance improve together. The heat and humidity in Texas make it more difficult but I think that will help us in the long run.
An example of how we differ in eating choices:
There’s a place in Waco, Texas called Health Camp . My first experience at Health Camp was in 3rd grade on a Spring Break road trip with my best friend’s family to San Antonio. We were going to visit the Alamo , Sea World and attend the grand opening of Fiesta Texas . It was a big deal. We stopped at Health Camp for burgers and tator tots on the way to San Antonio and I remember my friend’s parents laughing about the tongue-in-cheek name of this well-known, greasy burger joint.

The menu is pretty basic:
Super Burger – double meat, double cheese.
Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Bacon Cheeseburger
Grilled Cheese
Hot Dog, Chili Dog, Corn Dog
Tator Tots, Onion Rings, French Fries
Ice Cream Sundaes, Shakes and Malts

Billy wanted to stop at Health Camp on our way back to Dallas after our 4th of July weekend in Austin . We pulled up around 12:30 and it was packed. Smart boy called in his order ahead of time for pickup so it took no time at all. Well, just enough time for me to snap this photo.

He ordered the Super Burger (hold the onions) and Tator Tots.

He said it was just okay. The meat was dry and the burger was lacking the overall juiciness that makes a great burger. I stuck to the essential bird food for a road trip. Some of my favorites: apples, bananas, Larabars, raw nuts and plenty of water.
Is there a special place you love to stop on road trips for a treat?
During college, we’d always stop at Braum’s on trips from Dallas to Lawrence, Kansas. ( Jayhawks , anyone?) I’d order a huge cone of strawberry ice cream.
Do you workout with a spouse, significant other or workout buddy? Or do you prefer to workout alone?
I like both. Sometimes it’s nice to have company but I also like get in a zone by myself.
