Health and Your Heart: Why You May Not Be Getting the Benefits of Omega 3s

Posted Aug 25 2014 12:40pm

Omega 3s Improving blood pressure, lowering your risk of cardiovascular disease, including reducing the risk of sudden heart attack and stroke are just three of the many heart health benefits associated with supplementing with Omega-3 fatty acids . You will see on this list that this healthy fat has been proven to be beneficial for improving numerous other health problems as well, including arthritis, insulin resistance, dry eye syndrome, asthma and depression!

Eating foods like flaxseeds, wild caught salmon, herring, mackerel, sea bass, halibut, sardines, walnuts, grass fed and finished beef and dairy, navy and kidney beans are among the best food sources of this critical nutrient.

Especially if you have been told you have high cholesterol and therefore are at higher risk for heart disease, your doctor may have also told you to supplement with fish oil. That’s a great supplement to improve heart health. However, if you are also on a statin drug, here’s what you may not know: recent research reveals that statin drugs destroy any benefits you would get from the Omega 3s.

Some previous studies seemed to indicate that Omega 3s had little or no impact on cardiovascular health which created a great deal of controversy and confusion. Should you take Omega-3s or not? If studies showed no benefit, why bother? Well what was not made clear was that most of the participants were not only taking Omega-3s, they were also taking statin drugs. Numerous, more recent research studies conclude that statins block the effectiveness of the healthy fats.

Besides providing the real reason for the contradictory research results, this points up the importance of getting the whole story behind the headlines!
