Half Marathon Training

Posted Apr 16 2011 11:03pm

I think I’m all caught up now! If you missed my last posts, they are: Texas , love this coffee house , dinner at Back Bay Social Club , and concierge event and lunch . Smile

Another thing that’s been keeping me busy is my half marathon training! It’s less than two months to the Run to Remember half marathon and although I think my running is still going well, I haven’t really been dedicated to the tempo runs and intervals. The last week of March and beginning of April was spent getting ready to go to Texas, spending time in Texas, and then getting myself back from vacation. Since coming home, I haven’t been to the YMCA. In fact, I’ve forgotten the combination to my lock! And of course, I scratched it off the back of the lock and I didn’t write it down anywhere. Hmm…That ever happen to you? Maybe I should just buy a new lock.

Since my Texas trip, I’ve logged a total of 7 running workouts on Daily Mile . I’ve done some strength and yoga, but I don’t usually log those. Of the runs, I’ve done two long runs (7 miles and 8 miles) and a few shorter runs for speed. My 7 mile run was on the hotel treadmill because it was just too hot to run outside in Dallas. I have to admit, the run was tough. I had my music with me and David running next to me, but the miles just took so long. I averaged about 10 minute miles. The 8 mile run this past Thursday was A-MAZING! I ran along the Charles River at 7:30 in the morning and the sun was shining with just a slight breeze. I ran it strong the whole way and ran it at about 9:45 minute miles. Smile

My training days have also been out of whack compared to the Hal Higdon guide I was planning on following. With my crazy schedule, it’s sometimes hard to keep a running schedule too. But I definitely do my best to at least get my long runs in and cross train adequately too.

Alright, enough with the running! On Thursday, I had the day off and I headed to Portsmouth to have lunch with my cousin, Angie, who’s birthday is next week. We went to the Portsmouth Brewery for lunch. The service was a little spotty. It was evident when the server longingly looked outside and said he wished he was out there. We didn’t see him too much throughout the meal, so we’re wondering if he actually did go outside!

For lunch, I had the veggie burger with provolone cheese and sautéed onions. It was really good! I had it with a side of chips and salsa.

I was actually really impressed with their menu. In addition to the veggie burger, they had tofu and tempeh on the menu. I want to go back to try their extensive beer list too. Winking smile

Later that day, I was invited by the GBCA and Panorama magazine to try out the new Boston Olive Oil Company on Newbury Street for a tasting. There were a few other concierge there as well and we had free rein of the store to try any combinations of olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. I tried an espresso with lemon, fig with mushroom and sage, pumpkin spice, coconut, pomegranate and their basic olive oils.

For the olive oils, we were instructed to hold the paper cup in our hands, rotate to warm it up, sniff it, then slurp it like your momma always told you not too. Out of the three (frantoio verde robusto, mission, arbequina) that we tried, the mission was the smoothest, with the other two having a distinct peppery aftertaste to it. I can’t wait to come back to the store to pick up some pomegranate, fig and coconut. And you can do a tasting anytime you like, although they recommend that if you don’t plan on buying anything to keep the tasting to a minimum. But it’s a very fun evening, especially if you get a group together to go.

This weekend is the Boston Marathon!! It’s been crazy busy at the hotel and I look forward to recapping the weekend for you all next week!

Will you be in Boston this weekend?

Portsmouth Brewery is located at 56 Market Street in Portsmouth, NH. Boston Olive Oil Company is located at 262 Newbury Street, Boston, MA.
