Habit 3: Okay so i'm late in moving my ass. I was away in SanFran and Tahoe which may not be great for writing blogs on time, but it was great for me. I jogged my way across Portola Valley, and then skied the hills of Tahoe, and I drank my water with lemon, and ate enough fiber.
Which to be honest can be challenging, given I was on the go and on airplanes and cars for the past five days. Modern life can make normal eating, and healthy living a real day to day challenge. But good health is about what you do everyday, not once a month or even once a week....
So - how's your bum? Right now you should be happily swigging water every single day (Habit 1) - you're hydrated and happy, and your skin is glowing so much that Ryan Gosling has asked for your number, and Evian is considering sponsoring your new habit.
You should be an expert water drinker at this point. Water experts carry portable water bottles that are not plastic, and they are with you as much or more often than your cell phone. Water experts look at people who drink pop with confusion and disdain....
Perhaps you're now into water experimentation; adding lemon or a dash or juice or even having an herbal tea, or wearing a fashionable terry cloth head band while drinking water. But please don't add some chemical flavour crap in a packet to your water!! Not good. Remember your 75% water, not 75% Crystal light or diet soda.
Ah - the fiber...(Habit 2) I would love to hear if people noticed a BIG difference after adding some real fiber to their diet. Do you brag about your trips to the toilet? Are you starting to try to out do yourself? Are you getting the poo (not with an h as requested by Mick) bug, where you actually notice when they aren't as big and as fabulous as they can be? If you are, then I am infinitely proud of you. You're beginning to be bowel savvy, which means healthier and hotter.
Okay so now Habit 3: Move Your Ass or Exercise.... Don't close your laptop or leave your computer or shrug. I know you've heard it before, I know you don't want to do it. I know that you don't have the time, or you're not athletic, or you hate gyms, or perhaps you simply don't really like the idea of sweating. I'm hear to tell you it's doable. Totally doable and exercising is f*cking hot. Seriously there is nothing more sexy than a healthy, toned body sweaty from exercising. Conversely there is nothing quite as off putting, as someone just randomly sweating as they eat hot dogs and watch tv.
Exercise sweat is hot, lazy sweat is not.
The ASS BACKWARD Diet is about only doing things that are manageable and sustainable because if you can't do it, you won't do it. Plus really if you do any of these habits for longer than two weeks, you'll feel and look so much better it will be hard to stop.
You know that exercise is good for you, but what you may not know is that exercise is specifically good for your bowel.
We are supposed to be muscle machines, we were designed to move, not sit on a soft cushy seat and eat cheese puffs.
Studies show that exercise reduces the risk of many diseases but studies have also shown that exercises like jogging or brisk walking, swimming and cycling and dance among others also increase bowel transit time significantly. What that means in bowel speak, is more exercise, means your body gets the waste out of your body faster. So exercise actually improves digestion. Hmmm.
Okay so exercise makes your ass look good, it gets the poo out faster and it decreases a huge amount of diseases...
So what were your excuses for not doing it again?
Let me perhaps appeal to your vanity. A cleaner bowel and skin that is well oxygenated through exercise make you look younger longer.
An exercise like running or brisk walking is awesome for your bowel because you have to hold your core tight while you move, improving the muscle control in your abdomen.
Being a mother does not mean that you must sport a paunch and have no time for yourself. Put yourself first for once. Mothers can look fab and have the abs, ass and bowels to prove it.
You do not naturally turn to fat after 40 - like getting fit, getting fat, or simply unfit takes real work.
Going to the gym is amazing for toning, however - eating is still wear it's at in regards to weight. I tell clients how you look is 20% exercise and 80% what you put in your body. Then of course genetics are at play and yes i know it sucks.
There's a rumor going around gyms saying you don't need to do cardio. Yeah well you don't need to drive with your eyes open, but you probably should. Weights are awesome for building up muscle and speeding up your metabolic rate; however cardio works the heart like nothing else can, and last time I checked having a heart that worked well, was more important than smoking guns.
All people can eat the same. Yeah this is really sad but some people can eat a salad bowl of pasta and not gain an ounce. It's okay to hate them silently, just realize not all of us are this blessed, in fact most of us aren't.
Habit 3: Commit to 20 minutes of real exercise each day, and yes this is a minimum....
This exercise can be almost anything. Top picks would be jogging, brisk walking, jumping jacks, skipping rope, dancing full on to some great music, or doing a fitness class, kettle bells, calisthenics, weights. I know someone is going to ask so yes sex can be exercise but not that way most people do it. So think Cirque de Soleil sex if that's your only exercise.
Walking around the block leisurely or at a pace that allows you to talk comfortably on the cell phone is not good enough. Standing near a treadmill, while you talk to a trainer, does not actually count as exercise. Buying a great workout outfit and sipping water walking past a gym to get a coffee is not considered exercise either.
Do it first thing in the morning, get up early and get it over with. This jump starts your entire system. I get up at 5:15 every morning except 1 to do my workout. I might be crazy, but I've also got some fairly toned abs too.
Pick something you kind of like. Do something that you find fun, you're far more likely to do it.
Get a buddy to do it with you. Check up on each other and don't be kind when they don't show up, give them sh*t.
A little means a lot. When I have a client who is first starting out I tell them to do 20 minutes of calisthenics each morning. That means 3 sets of 20 crunches, lunges, squats, sit ups, push ups and then hold the plank for as long as you can repeat 3 times.
The best way to motivate a spouse into doing exercise is to lose weight and look hotter yourself, they'll get worried/jealous/scared and then they'll get the lead out...
Some Exercise Rules of thumb....
Do something every single day for a minimum of 20 minutes.
Measure yourself if you have weight to lose, measure arms, thighs, hips and waist. Do not weigh yourself very often. Remember muscle ways more than fat.
I did a boot camp once and lost 5 inches and lost no weight at all, so don't get hung up on the numbers.
Find a way to make yourself accountable to doing it: like a buddy.
Final Exercise Thoughts:
I think people who work out hard core once a week are nuts. They put all their energy into one crazy workout and strain their heart and muscles just one day a week making them prone to injury. What you really want to do is something that makes you move, i mean really move once a day. It doesn't have to take a lot of time, it doesn't even have to involve a cute or tight outfit, it just has to get your core body temperature up and your muscles contracting and moving.
Essentially we are a product of our habits and if our habits include bags of chips, sitting at a computer and cruising the net, after a short amount of time that's exactly what you'll look like; a bag of over salted chips.
This is about short bursts of action over the long term ,to create long term manageable results. That's it.
So this week shake that ass, make Beyonce jealous.
Plus I'd love to hear any comments or questions anyone might have.... habit 4 awaits.
