Green Your Yoga Routine

Yoga is a huge part of my life. I teach yoga part time at Amsa Yoga in Columbia, S.C. and my own yoga practice threads through every aspect of my life. With so much time spent on the mat, how green my routine is has a huge impact on the planet. How green is your practice? If you’ve never thought about it before, here are some tips to make it a little more environmentally friendly:

1. Choose a Green Mat
We depend on our yoga mats, shoot; I probably spend 90 minutes atop mine each day. The next time you need to purchase a new one, consider buying an eco-friendly variety. Jade and Manduka both have really good recycled mats and there are many others on the market as well from which to choose.

2. Cut the Consumption From the Practice
You don’t have to have the hottest new yoga gear to be a good yogi. That’s the furthest thing from the point. Don’t worry about buying trendy yoga clothing, props, and other gear. Work with what you have because whether you buy recycled gear or not, it’s all consumption and it all takes energy to produce.

3. Choose Close by Retreats
You don’t have to fly across the world to follow your favorite teacher. Wait until he or she teaches closer to your neck of the woods and then plan a retreat. Find a studio or retreat center closer to home so you’re not constantly catching flights that really put a damper on your carbon footprint.

4. Yoga Diets are Green Diets
Yogis usually abide by a vegetarian diet that’s loaded with whole foods and local produce. It’s a green way to eat and it’s great for your practice. Be as conscious of your diet as you are of your practice.
