It’s that time of year again. Time to make a bunch of New Year’s Resolutions that you will most likely have given up by Martin Luther King Day. Why do we put ourselves through this misery each year? Why do we try and convince ourselves that we have to look a certain way and be a certain size to be happy when we know in the end it won’t change a thing? This year why not resolve to make the world a greener place? Why not resolve to consume a little less of the planet and love it a little more?
1. Go Beyond Recycling and Use Less
Resolve to cut the amount you consume. Consider replacing paper towels (whether recycled or not it all takes energy) with cloth towels. Don’t use your printer unless you absolutely have to. Choose products with as little packaging as possible and compost what you can. Bring your reusable water bottle and coffee mug wherever you go.
2. Make Whole Foods Cooking a Way of Life
That means avoid buying anything processed and packaged even if it’s organic. Make your own baby food, granola, bread, cookies, crackers, etc. The more you make the less packaging that you have to throw away and the less food to come from a manufacturing plant.
3. Walk and Bike More
Make walking and biking not just a form of exercise but a form of transportation. If transportation becomes your workout then you don’t have to worry about working out later on. Leave your car parked whenever you can and try and reduce how often you hit the pump.
4. Unplug, Turn Off, Turn Down
Whenever you’re not using an appliance, unplug it from the wall. It still continues to suck energy even when it’s off. Turn everything off before you leave the room and bundle up so you can turn the heat down as low as possible.
These are simple yet highly effective changes that you can make in your life in 2011.
