Gold Humanism Honor Society

I haven’t blogged in the past 2 days and the reason is ridiculous.  On Monday, I left my computer on my treadmill and told myself that on Tuesday I would blog while walking on the treadmill first thing in the morning. Well, I didn’t want to get on the treadmill on Tuesday so my computer stayed there, and I didn’t blog. And the same thing happened on Wednesday. Am I lazy or what!?!?! I finally took my computer back to my desk so I can sit and blog like a normal person. Luckily, I did get in a ridiculously good workout yesterday.  I swear, if I did that workout every day I would give Jillian Michaels a run for her money.  Here’s what I did:

1.  Stair stepper for 20 minutes to warm up (decently fast pace).

2.  Back and Biceps in circuit fashion:

Circuit 1:

  • Lat pulldowns x 12
  • Dumbbell bicep curls x 12
  • Plank x 1 minute
  • Repeat circuit 4 times

Circuit 2:

  • Seated rows x 12
  • Alternating hammer curls x 12
  • Clam crunches x 15
  • Repeat circuit 4 times

Circuit 3:

  • Bent over barbell rows x 12
  • Barbell bicep curls x 12
  • Bicycle crunches x 20 each side
  • Repeat circuit 3 times

3.  Treadmill- walk 5 minutes, HIIT sprints x 10 minutes (30 seconds on, 30 seconds off), walk 5 minutes to cool down 10:17:8   The entire workout took an hour and a half, but I think I could get through the weights faster- I really took my time yesterday. To do the sprints, I just set the treadmill at my sprint pace (usually 9mph) and run for 30 seconds, then I grab the side rails and hop off to the edges and rest for 30 seconds.  The treadmill stays running underneath me. 10:17:6   Does anyone else use this sprinting technique?  I just think it takes too long to actually change the treadmill speed. At the end of my workout, my headphones were all twisted into my necklace.  I hate it when that happens!!!  I really do need some headphones that won’t do that.


Okay, now I want to talk about the amazing ceremony I got to attend the other night!!

Medical schools around the country celebrate compassion and humanism in medicine through the Gold Humanism Honor Society.  To be selected for membership, you have to be nominated by your peers or faculty.  This year, 34 4th year medical students were selected to join the honorary society.  I was thrilled to find out I was accepted to join the GHHS this year.  So many of my classmates do incredible things and deserve recognition.  I felt so honored to stand beside them as we were awarded for our efforts in patient care, leadership, and service.


The ceremony was done so well.  At first we could mingle with each other and enjoy some hors d’oeuvres.  The event started with a keynote address from a local science teacher who has spent his entire career inspiring students and giving back to his community.  Next, 6 residents and 2 faculty members were inducted into the society. Lastly, myself and 33 other medical students were inducted.

As each student walked up, they read some things that our patients and faculty had said about us.  I can’t get over how incredible all my classmates are.  Some of the things that were said about them- wow.  When they called my name and read what people had said about me, I almost cried.  It was so nice!

Then, we got little pins to pin on each other.





There are times in medical school when it’s easy to forget what it’s really all about.  It’s easy to get so caught up in studying, getting good grades, and the stress of it all.  Sometimes we forget the REAL reason we all went to medical school- to help people, to give back to our patients, and to be care givers.  Nights like this are so meaningful to me because they help me remember that it’s not all about perfect grades- it’s about making a difference in people’s lives.  It’s about healing.  :-)
