girl talk: 5 of my best beauty secrets

Posted Feb 10 2012 8:01pm

staying au-nat and beauty-ful is not an easy job

Looking and feeling fantastic is something that everyone wants, and many of us fight a good fight each and every day to achieve.

It can be a struggle, can’t it? Some days I just feel like my hair won’t look right or my eyes won’t pop no matter what I try. Other days, it feels like a cinch!

Although I haven’t mastered the art just yet, I wanted to share some beauty tips that have become part of my everyday quest to feel healthy, look fresh, and live on a budget!

And we only have a deal if you share your favorite beauty tip after. It’s only fair, right?

1. I lotion up everyday (with the RIGHT stuff)

Soft, supple skin is how we stay looking young so staying moisturized is a must everyday! And even more important, moisturizing with the right products that truly improve your skin without the use of harsh or toxic chemicals is key.

I’m really loving Derma E for face, eye, and night cream. And yes, I’m still working on  my Alba stash before finding a more suitable body lotion.

looks like that hand could use a little moisture....

If you’re really brave, make your own! I’m going to make my own lotion this weekend based on this recipe . Crunchy Betty is also another great resource for homemade solutions!

2.  I’m lovin’ my locks!

Embracing your natural hair texture and/or color is a great way to save time and money and really let your natural beauty shine though.

I’m serious! It’s time to unleash that natural curl or wave or thin texture and love it!

I used to fight my straight and thin hair by drying, curling, waving, crunching, spraying…you-name-it-ing, I would do it once or twice a day!

before: lots of product and styling in 2005

Would I like a burger with my fried mane?

Now I save a ton of time and use virtually zero hair products by wearing my hair straight and not completely blow-drying my hair most days a week. I’ve noticed a dramatic improvement in the health of my hair!

after: a partial blow-dry only in 2011

No, I may not look as ‘glam,’ but it’s so much easier to manage and I love how soft and shiny my hair has become. And I save a lot of money without all those products and styling tools!

3. I dry brush everyday for glowing skin

Dry brushing is one of my newest and and most favorite beauty secrets! I got this idea from the lovely ladies at at Vegalicious and Hol-Fit .

Getting our scrub on everyday has a detoxifying effect on the body and helps cleanse our lymphatic system. Other benefits include:

  • Increased circulation
  • Exfoliating
  • Stimulate hormones and immune system
  • Decreased cellulite
  • Aging prevention

All you need is a natural bristle brush with a long handle and about 3-5 minutes before your shower.

all you need is an all natural brush like so, only $6.99 at Home Goods!

And if you workout in the AM like moi, dry brushing before your shower and post-sweat sesh is an excellent time to maximize the detoxifying effects!

4. I treat zits with Tea Tree Oil

Toss the Clearasil and switch to all natural and more effective Tea Tree Oil . It’s antibacterial properties make it perfect for treating acne, in addition to these other home remedies.

an acne eraser that gets along with my skin too!

I bought a small jar at Whole Foods for around $8 and use a q-tip to apply a small dab on a blemish. Make sure to test a small, obscure skin area to make sure you don’t have a reaction! It doesn’t bother the skin on my face at all.

5. I stretch or do yoga several times a week

Nobody looks their best when they’re hunched over and stressed out, which is usually what a 9-5′er of corporate bliss will do!

One of the best ways to counteract the stress and dysfunction our day jobs force on our mind, body, and soul is to realign all three with daily stretching and yoga.

ahhh isn't it funny how a mat and some weights can make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?

Try to fit some stretching or yoga into your nightly routine, even if it’s just 5-10 minutes some nights. Anytime I do this, I always get a better night sleep and wake up feeling more refreshed and slender!

If you’re still not convinced or think you’re too busy, let this nugget from Yogamovement.com change your mind:

“Because yoga helps maintain a balanced metabolism, it also helps to regulate weight. Additionally, yoga stretches muscles lengthwise, causing fat to be eliminated around the cells, thus reducing cellulite.”

Yoga ROCKS!
