Awhile back, I did a post on making Chinese takeout at home and shared an easy recipe for General Tsao Chicken.

Well, I thought that I loved that dish, but I recently made a version with tofu that was even better!

It might not be anything to alert the presses over, but it is certainly worth sharing with all of you (and this is coming from a person who doesn’t really love tofu that much).

 

General Tsao Tofu

(Serves 4-5)

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: Less than 10 minutes (doesn’t take rice and vegetables into consideration)

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 block of extra firm tofu (pressed and dried)
Approximately 1/4 cup Trader Joe’s General Tsao Stir Fry Sauce
1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds (optional)

In a medium saute pan, heat the oil and saute the tofu over medium-high heat until golden brown all around.  Stir in the General Tsao sauce until the mixture is moist but not too drippy.  Sprinkle the sesame seeds on top, if using.  Serve over brown rice with roasted carrots and broccoli.


This is such a fresh version of Chinese takeout.  Because it doesn’t contain a bunch of grease, it is obviously much healthier than takeout and also much lighter.

While the Trader Joe’s General Tsao Stir Fry Sauce does contain some sugar and sodium, all of the ingredients on the label are identifiable.  Always a good thing, right?

Do you have a favorite recipe that incorporates tofu?  As I mentioned above, I’m not a huge tofu fan and prefer tempeh.  However, I do love experimenting with new recipes, so links and suggestions are welcome!

  1. I did something similar to this with orange sauce and tempeh a while back and I think Greg licked the plate after. I never cook with tofu at home and really need to try it!

  4. That dish looks yummy and simple! I have yet to try tofu, though. It intimidates me for some reason. I should probably get over it so that I can make that meal. :)

      It used to intimidate me too, but now I find it so easy and convenient! It is really versatile too. Last night, I made teryaki tofu. You can do it! :)
