A brilliant idea from Saveur

How to Peel a Head of Garlic in Less Than 10 Seconds from SAVEUR.com on Vimeo.

UPDATE 09/29/11: I tried this trick last night, and I’m sad to say that it didn’t work. But that’s very likely a fault of equipment.

First, I couldn’t smash the head of garlic hard enough with my hand, so I put it between to bamboo cutting boards and gave it a good whack. That worked like a charm! The head came about very easily in a nanosecond. I’m adding this technique to my permanent bag of tricks.

I don’t have metal mixing bowls, so I plopped the cloves into two ceramic bowls and, as instructed, shook like the “dickens.” Nothing! Nothing happened, except my arms got a little tired.

Anyone else make it work?!

  1. Ellen says:

ha ha ha, it works!!! LOVE IT!

  2. Carrey Bull says:

Amazing!!! Can’t wait to try it!

  3. Laurie D. says:

Going to have to try that next time I make roast chicken stuffed with garlic.

  4. Martin says:

That looks like magic. I won’t believe it until I try it myself. :-)

  5. Lydia says:

    OMG it’s MAGIC!!!

  6. Svend says:

This is great. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Jen says:

OMG! Too funny! I’ll give it a try. :-)

  8. Linda Sand says:

I have not tried it yet but I think the shape of his bowls might have been more important than the material. The shape would cause the shaken garlic to roll around a lot which would, I think, help peel it.

  9. Amy says:

I saw this on the kitchn.com first and tried it immediately. it worked for me and I’m THRILLED! When I think of the hours and hours I’ve spent peeling garlic… Wish I’d learned this sooner!

I'm going to do a whole post on this book because I loved it so much. It's right next to The Historian and The Book Thief in my heart. It's got it all: historical setting, a little romance, the threat of war, a passion for books...
