Freshman class gets waterlogged welcome to campus

Posted Aug 16 2010 12:00am

Sixty percent chance of rain. That was the forecast last Saturday morning.

For the past several weeks, Birmingham residents have endured record-high temperatures and brief, hit-and-miss rain showers that have left the ground powder dry and gardeners frustrated.
But last Saturday morning, the day when UAB's freshman class was scheduled to move into the residence halls, it was pouring rain. And it kept pouring rain all morning.

However, in spite of the inclement weather, the freshmen and their families made their way to Blazer Hall and Camp Hall and unloaded furniture, television sets, computers, printers, mattresses, clothing and box after box of other whatnot from their vehicles.

Student volunteers from nearly 30 campus organizations were on hand to help the freshmen and their families carry items into the residence halls. UAB also provided the students bottled water, popcorn and snow cones.

Although the rain made move-in day more challenging, it did provide some welcome relief from the heat.
