Seems like, around this time of year, there’s a lot of talk about gifting. In fact, I just came home from NINE hours of gift buying fun. Eh, as much as I gripe about it, I have to admit that I really, really love it. There’s something about coming across something that just makes the perfect gift for someone you know. Watching the expressions of these types of gifts being received is just amazing and makes my little day. All of this make me think about the gifts I’ve given to people in the past. My favorite things to give seem to be some comfy pajamas, a great book, spa weekends… pampering, cozy things that can really be enjoyed. Obvi, that totally depends on the person. I mean, I wouldn’t get, say, my brother-in-law any of those things. When I think of the *best* gifts that I’ve ever gave anyone, a long list of things comes to mind. Not that I’m some awesomely, amazing, gift-of-the-century giver or anything like that, it’s just that I’ve found a few things that I felt really made the recipient smile.
Like this video. Recently, my best friend that lives miles & states away, had a birthday. Because I miss her and hate not being there, I decided to send a “video” birthday card. Well, not so much send as post it on her facebook wall.
She cried, and then I almost cried because she was crying. Ah, I love gifts that bring a tear to your eye. :: grabs a tissue ::
Last year for Christmas, we gave my niece her very first computer, which is a laptop nonetheless. Since moving far, far away two years ago, I don’t get to see her that often. I knew when we moved that this would be the hardest part of it all – I’d felt like I’d completely miss out on her growing up. Moving away from my parents, sister & grandparents would be difficult enough, but telling her how far away we were moving was absolutely heartbreaking. And life changing. The thing that made this gift really special was that it was so much more than just a laptop for her to play games on. It was a way for me to talk to her face to face – and to, perhaps, make this a little easier for the both of us. We installed Skype on it before we wrapped it and showed her how it works – we spent most of Christmas morning sitting in opposite rooms of my parents house video chatting so she could learn all about it. THAT is the best gift that I ever gave.
May not sound all “Oooh, wow!” to you, but to the eight year old who no longer gets to see her aunt very much and for the aunt that needs more than a phone call because she moved away – it’s huge. Video chats with my favorite little person EVER mean the world.
