Those mice given the choline-deficit diet had pups with lesser blood vessel presence in the brain as compared to those rodents on the standard diet. The study which appeared in the journal ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences’ was helmed by Dr. Steven Zeisel who believes that this finding may well hold significance for human-beings.
Dr. Zeisel stated that merely fourteen percent of expectant moms in the U.S. are consuming requisite quantities of choline in their dietetic intake and below five percent of young females in the eighteen to thirty year old age band who have not yet conceived are consuming the suggested intake.
Dr. Zeisel also pointed out that expectant mothers with the least choline levels in their bodies have a four-fold greater likelihood of delivering a baby with a birth anomaly in comparison to those who consumed the most. Moreover, nearly half of the younger females have a heritable constitution which would mean they would require additional choline when pregnant for protecting their foetuses.
