Fitness Talk Thursday: 7 Ways I Get Motivated To Exercise

Posted Aug 04 2011 1:39pm

Some days I really don’t want to get out of bed to work out. The bed is super comfy, sometimes the sun’s not out and let’s face it…curling up with a cup of coffee watching re-runs of Jersey Shore sounds a lot better than running on a treadmill.

This morning I woke up to this:

securedownload-21Did I want to get up to exercise? No way!

But I did.

Here are my Top 7 Ways I Get Motivated To Exercise

1. Remind Yourself Why You Do It- When I’m sitting there putting my hair up into a ponytail getting ready to go thinking “why the hell am I up so early just to do yoga” I remember why it’s so important. I get fewer headaches when I exercise. I have more energy. I am happier. I feel better.

2. Find A Fitness Buddy- You’re more likely to not cancel a workout if it’s an appointment with a friend. Take the time to catch up with each other!

3. Do What You Like To Do- If you’re planning on running 5 miles tomorrow morning and you absolutely hate running, it’s going to be really hard to get yourself moving. Only do activities you enjoy. There’s really no sense in being miserable through the whole weight lifting class if you hate lifting weights.

4. Challenge Yourself- I always have goals or challenges for myself and one is always fitness related. There are hundreds of challenges online, just search around the internet and find something that works for you (if you don’t want to come up with your own). If there’s a fitness challenge you’d like to see on the blog, let me know! I’m always trying to come up with challenges for myself as well. Send any ideas to thatdeepbreath@gmail.com.

5. Fuel Yourself Up- To have the energy to exercise you need to eat foods that nourish your body. After sitting around all day eating potato chips, you probably won’t feel like going for an afternoon run. Start your day off right with a delicious, healthy breakfast. It’ll make a huge difference in your decision whether to work out or not.

6. Set Realistic Goals- Sometimes I get a little crazy with my goals. I think “wow, it would be really cool if I did this, this, this, this, oh yea and ran a marathon.” Uh yeah, not going to happen. Set realistic goals that you know are possible to accomplish. Start off by just setting a couple.
Example:

This week I want to: go for a 15 minute walk everyday and stretch every morning

This is possible to fit into a crazy-busy life. Wake up, do a few stretches, make breakfast and go on with my day. After lunch, take a break from work and go for that 15 minute walk. Boom, you’re done and you just dominated you’re goals for the day.

7. Remember: You Never Regret A Workout- No matter what you do, whether it’s a 5 minute jog or a 5 mile jog, you won’t regret it.

What gets you motivated to exercise?
