How much damage would an electric shock cause, depends on factors like: the kind of current, the intensity of the current i.e. how high was the voltage, the way through which the current moved through the affected individual’s body, the overall health of the affected individual and how promptly was the person treated. As soon as you come across any individual receiving an electric shock, make a call to the number of the local emergency; doing so is even more important if the affected person show one or more of the following signs:
Arrhythmias or problems with rhythm of the heart
Respiratory failure
Burns
Muscle aches and contractions
Seizures
Unconsciousness
Tingling sensation and numbness
After informing the local emergency about the electric shock incident, you must follow the guidelines provided below as you wait for the medical help:
Never touch the affected individual without gazing properly. The person might still be connected with an electrical source; if so, touching him might make you another victim of the current.
If possible, switch off the electricity source; in case it is not possible for you to switch off the electricity source, move it away from the affected person and you using any non-conducting object like articles made of wood, plastic or cardboard.
Next, check for the usual symptoms of circulation like movement, coughing or breathing. If any such sign is absent, start offering CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately.
Once circulation is restored, make the person lie down with his head slightly lower; his legs must stay elevated.
You must also take the following precautions while taking care of the ailing individual:
Never touch him with bare hands.
Never get close to any high-voltage wire.
Never try to move the person if he has incurred electrical injuries unless he is in absolute danger.
