Final long run of marathon training

Posted Nov 12 2011 2:43am

Can you believe today was the last long run on my training plan?

final 6 miler

I sure can’t. The previous 18 weeks have really flown by and next week is my race.

The rain caused me to miss one of this week’s runs, so I went back and forth on whether I should try to make up a few of those missed miles. Debating between 6 and 8 miles, I set off on the river path to complete my final long training run.

The weather was quite nice today—perfect for a run—and there were many other people out being active. I love passing by fellow runners (or even walkers and bikers) and knowing that we share some kind of bond by just being out there and feeling passionate about our sport.

The run was pretty uneventful. I ran. I thought about the upcoming marathon. I hyper-concentrated on every sensation (is that ache/feeling/anything an oncoming injury?!?!?!). And then I walked two miles back home because I ended up deciding that stopping at 6 miles, per my training plan, was my best bet. Those extra two miles weren’t going to add much to my training, so why risk an injury with unnecessary mileage at this point?

Getting my sweat on felt so good.

I have to admit that as much as I don’t enjoy cold weather, I am looking forward to cold-weather running—less sweat and less stink.

I took my final long run as a chance to try out my planned marathon race outfit:

planned marathon outfit

  • Uniqlo purple sweat wicking T-shirt
  • Old Navy sports bra
  • HIND compression running tights
  • Adidas running socks
  • Saucony Progrid Triumph 7 running shoes
  • Spibelt
  • Nathans water bottle

I’ve worn this outfit and used this gear numerous times during my training, so I know what to expect of it—where it’s likely to cause chafing, where sweat soaks through, etc. I feel very comfortable with this outfit for the marathon. If the temperatures drop significantly, I’ll replace the T-shirt with a long-sleeved shirt.

My only hang-up with the above outfit is it makes me feel chubby. Compression tights aren’t the most form flattering pants to begin with, so I guess this reaction is to be expected… but I am feeling a bit jigglier these days, especially in the stomach. Can’t wait to return to strength training after the marathon.

Today has been such a fun day already with my run and Jeremy’s school festival. We’re spending the rest of the night at the onsen , going out for dinner, and watching Lost (we just started Season 4).

I’m currently working on changing the blog’s layout, so bear with me if anything looks crazy in the upcoming week. :)
