Fertility Friday: Microwave cooking damages Fertility

Posted Oct 07 2011 3:00am

When you’re conscientiously eating a whole foods, organic, nutrient rich diet to optimise your fertility, the last thing you want is to be sabotaging your best efforts by using this common piece of kitchen equipment that is highly damaging to your fertility and overall health.

microwaveMicrowaves: Convenient as they may be, cooking and heating your food up in minutes, microwave ovens have been outlawed in Russia since 1976 along with a warning about the ‘biological and environmental damage’ that can result from their use. Need I go on…?

Microwaving food modifies its original chemical structure or ‘form’ in a way that our bodies cannot recognise. Up to 90% of nutritional value is destroyed during microwaving. Vitamins and minerals are destroyed and altered in such a way that the body is not able to metabolise (break down and use) the ingested nutrients to use for energy, growth and repair. These de-structured food compounds that our bodies cannot breakdown accumulate in our bodies as waste and the absorption of unrecognisable molecules can lead to a host of health issues, depleting our immune systems and turning molecules into toxic substances.
The limited research that has been carried out clearly highlights the questionable safety of microwave use. One of the results of consistently ingesting microwaved foods is that it alters our hormone production and can lead to changes in cellular DNA affecting both fertility and foetal development. By diminishing male and female hormone production, this leads to poor egg and sperm health contributing to reduced fertility, increased miscarriages and is detrimental to the growth of a health foetus.

If you currently use a microwave oven for most of your meal preparations, the key to becoming microwave-free is to plan ahead:

  • defrost food the evening before or that morning
  • use a regular oven instead
  • re-heat food on the stove
  • learn to prepare simple, quick meals from scratch with fresh ingredients (start with one new recipe per week)
  • don’t eat from fast food joints that use microwaves

What are/were your greatest challenges in throwing out your microwave? Do you have any top tips to help no-microwave newbies?
