I had the grand idea to turn my blog into a book back in October. It seemed easy, “I’ll just compile the most popular recipes, write new/exclusive ones for the book, add a few nutrition tips, and BAM! A book!”
As I got into the process (which was obviously way more work than I intended, as most things are) the fear and doubt started to creep in. I started to make excuses for not following through. “I’m too busy. We have too much going on. I’ll do this when my business is bigger.” I really seriously considered forgetting the whole thing.
It would have been SO easy just to bag the whole thing; no one would have known. Except for me, and that’s the kicker.
I had jam-packed weeks every week until the end of the year to keep me busy, but I also knew that project management is one of my strengths. It was my good old friends fear and doubt that were holding me back.
Mark Twain has a famous quote that reads:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
I’m not talking money, either. I’m talking self-actualization, gratitude, and something much bigger than yourself.
So here’s what I told myself, “If people hate the book and it’s a flop, it would cost me a little embarrassment and time invested, but the world would move on and forget about it.
If I DON’T do this, it will cost me knowing that I chose to play small and hide because I was afraid of what people think.” (And mom always told me that judgement is an inner reflections, so when people are judging you they’re really judging themselves. Deep!)
There’s one more thing that pushed me over the edge to just go for it. I knew this book would HELP OTHER PEOPLE. My dear friend and business mentor Carmen Marshall has always taught me to always focus on helping other people to grow my own business. If you’re in it to genuinely help other people and take the focus off of yourself, your business will grow. (Again, deep!)
I’m unbelievably grateful for all of the support of my book . It has shining 5-star reviews and hit #1 in multiple categories on Amazon.com, including “Diets & Weight Loss” and “Vegetarian Cookbooks.”
Is it speaking your truth, starting your own business, ending a toxic relationship, embracing love, finally doing a health program to take care of yourself, or perhaps even publishing a book?
Thank you to everyone for supporting my book; I’m truly grateful for you all!
Cheers to YOU & YOUR future successes!
