Exam Time Stress

Posted Dec 07 2010 5:04pm

Despite my rough day yesterday , things are starting to look up.  I canceled all of my credit cards, I got a new student ID, and my dad overnighted me some money to last me until I can get a new debit card, which will take around 7 days to get here. I’ve done all I can, so I need to put this behind me and keep pushing forward.

If I didn’t go to school out of state, this wouldn’t be as much of an issue. Not only do I not have a bank here, but I also have no way of getting a new drivers license. The only thing I can really do is wait until I go home later this month, but it’s not too long, so I should be fine.

My parents are so awesome for helping me through this. I had a few moments yesterday where I just wanted to scream. Luckily, I made it through ;)

To be honest, I was a little afraid of going to the rec center this morning to work out. After what happened yesterday , it’s not exactly my favorite place on campus. I think I would rather be in the library…

Just kidding ;)

However, I sucked it up and went for an early morning workout. For me, working out during finals week is absolutely essential. Actually, working out every week day is essential, but more so during finals week and other stressful periods. It really helps me to stay focused

Running: 6 miles (3 barefoot)

Elliptical: 45 minutes of intervals

It was pretty chilly this morning (21 degrees), so I opted for an inside workout. My school’s gym is awesome and we have a pretty nice indoor track upstairs. While it’s not the most exciting place to run, it is very convenient when the weather is not cooperating. The treadmill makes me feel like a hamster running on a wheel, so the indoor track is the lesser of two evils.

Before my run, I went on the elliptical and did intervals for 45 minutes while I studied for my exam this afternoon.

It was a random workout, but I alternated hard and easy based on the pages of my textbook. Every time I turned the page, I switched from hard to easy or vice versa. Not exactly a set “workout”, but it helped to pass the time and I got some studying in.

Do you like to workout during exams? Or do you prefer to spend the extra time studying?

For me, it really helps with stress. I feel like a good workout really refreshes my body and mind to help keep me focused.

I know there are a lot of you guys out there taking exams, so just remember these things:

1. Avoid stressful situations

If you have a certain friend or situation that stresses you out, try to avoid it.

2. Eat healthy and EXERCISE.

When I eat well and exercise, my body just feels better. When my body feels good, it’s easier to stay focused on my studies and exams. For example, when I have too much sugar, I tend to crash, which leads me to lose focus.

Try to stick with a diet and exercise routine that you are familiar with and you no will have a positive impact on your body.

3. It’s OK to say no

If a friend wants to go to Starbucks, but you know you will end up talking to whole time, it’s OK to say no. If there are other opportunities to do something, reschedule.

4. Take Breaks

For every hour of studying, I like to take a 15 minute break. I either read blogs, fix a snack, or just lay down. After a few hours of this, I take another break to catch up on my favorite show or eat a meal (or blog ;) )

5. You have already put in the hard work

If you kept up with your studying and schoolwork throughout the semester, studying should be more like a review. If you are learning an entire semester’s worth of material in a few days, you might have a problem…

6. Your grades don’t define you

It’s not worth getting stressed out over exams. Just relax, do the best you can, and focus. If you have put in the hard work, you will be rewarded.

One more night of studying and I am DONE. My last exam is at 7 PM tomorrow night!

Who else out there is in exam week hell?
