Understanding Erectile Dysfunction

erectile dysfunction Erectile dysfunction may be an embarrassing topic to discuss for men, but it is a serious problem. The condition may be a sign of yet another health condition that needs to be treated immediately. However, erectile dysfunction can also be a side effect of taking certain medications. Regardless of whether a health problem or medication is the cause of the problem, consultation with a physician is necessary.

For men, sexual performance is very important. The failure to please one’s partner affects their confidence and lowers their self-esteem. This is the reason the inability to get or maintain an erection is such a big problem. It results in feelings such as shame and embarrassment, and often causes stress. In some cases, the failure to perform sexually also becomes the root of relationship problems. What most guys should know is that if they have such issue, they should not hesitate to speak to their doctor about it.  The problem can be solved once the factors that cause it are determined and addressed.

Erectile Dysfunction – The Main Problem

The inability to get or maintain an adequate erection for penetrative sexual intercourse is called erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence. It happens when the blood that flows into (and stays within the penis) is insufficient for sexual activity.  Having an erection problem is common among men, and it does happen from time to time. The problem becomes common as men age, but it is not a natural part of getting older. However, if the erection problem occurs regularly, the individual must immediately seek medical advice.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction must understand that the condition can be a sign of an underlying health problem, and this is the reason they must consult with a doctor immediately. Treating the health problem is the best way to treat erectile dysfunction.  If guys do not feel comfortable speaking with their physician about their erection problem, they should have a physical evaluation to determine what health condition they have. Health conditions and physical causes that result in erectile dysfunction include but are not limited to the following: obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure , diabetes , atherosclerosis (clogged blood vessels), Peyronie’s disease, Metabolic syndrome and multiple sclerosis. For older people, vascular and neurologic diseases are often the culprit.

Because the brain is involved in male sexual arousal and libido , psychological factors also contribute to erectile dysfunction. Stress, anxiety, depression and other similar mental health issues can cause or exacerbate the erection problem.  While erectile dysfunction can cause relationship problems, relationship problems can also be the root of the erection problem. Believe it or not, the fear of not performing sexually or the fear of not having an erection can also be the cause of erectile dysfunction.

There are also lifestyle factors to be considered when determining the cause of erectile dysfunction.  Cigarette use, alcohol use and other forms of substance abuse also bring about the problem.

Erectile Dysfunction and Medications

For some men, the first step to addressing erectile dysfunction is as simple as looking into the medicine cabinet and checking out the medications found there.  Research revealed that certain medications do cause the problem and that erectile dysfunction is a side effect of taking these drugs. Medications that often cause erectile dysfunction include chemotherapy drugs (i.e. Myleran, Cytoxan), diuretics and other drugs for high blood pressure (i.e. HydroDiuril, Inderal), antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs (i.e. Prozac, Zoloft, Valium) as well as  drugs (i.e. Lupron, Eulexin).  Even antihistamines (i.e. Benadryl, Vistaril)  and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. Naprosyn, Anaprox, Indocin) sometimes cause erection problems.

If the person taking one of the aforementioned medications is suffering from erectile dysfunction, he should first consult the doctor before stopping to take the drug.
