Endocrinologist Finds Cancer Cure with Hormones?

Posted Dec 01 2009 12:00am
7.6 million people died of cancer in 2007 according to the American Cancer Society...

Understanding WHY it happens is an important factor in discovering HOW it can be cured. Doctors and Scientists have discovered that nearly all cancers are caused by abnormalities of the genetic material in the mutated cells. These cells membranes can become weakened many ways, one of those ways is by the exposure to carcinogens in our environment---whether they're inhaled, ingested (eaten) or absorbed through the skin.

Known human carcinogens such as tobacco smoke, asbestos, certain dioxins, chemicals such as benzene, and UV rays fuel the formation of deadly cancer cells in our bodies. Knowing the foods, and activities that put us at greater risk for exposure is our only hope for prevention--Not smoking, or being around a person who smokes...wearing sunscreen...staying away from charred meats...orange soda..and so on- are all we can do to try and control our own fate...and even then, it is still somewhat of a mystery why it happens--why some people develop cancer and others do not.

A lot of my blogs talk about or reference back to the endocrine system and hormones. How they affect every function in your body and how only one hormone being "off" can cause your body to not function how it should-- once one hormone is out of sync, the rest will follow. I have focused on reading up on and sharing what I learned about the endocrine disruptors in our food and environment and even through our lifestyle play a role in obesity, hormonal imbalances and even disease.

So when I had GMA on this morning between clients, and I heard the story about how endocrinologist Dr. David Vesely  has been eliminated 80% of cancer in mice after only one month of treatment--I grabbed my green tea and focused in on the segment. WOW!!

I think we are most people are driven by personal experiences. If someone has a sick child, they make it their duty to learn everything they can about the illness and finding ways to get closer to a cure. In this day in age, patients have become their own advocates, sometimes helping urge their doctors to prescribe the RIGHT tests that crack the case. Many...probably the MAJORITY of charities are started by family members who have lost a loved one. I know I got into nutrition and fitness because of my own personal experiences, trying to take my understanding and learning a step further because of my clients experiences and health issues...now, if only my high school Algebra and Chemistry teachers would of related everything to Calories and Vo2Max I would of gotten straight A's!! Haha.

So, when respected endocrinologist Dr. David Vesely lost his wife of 30 years to breast cancer, he was motivated to apply his research to cancer cells and hormones. . . In the late 1980's his research focused on heart disease...and he discovered 3 peptide hormones made by the heart that were preventing normal heart cells from growing and multiplying. He wondered if these hormones could also control the growth of the most dreaded cells of all....cancer cells.

For the past seven years he has been studying this theory. He credits his inspiration to his grief-ridden son after he lost his mother to cancer. Dr. Vesely's son suggested he venture out from his work searching for ways to cure heart disease, applying some of his findings to cancer research.

The experiment

Exercise causes muscle growth, but a normal heart, the hardest working muscle in the body, retains its size and shape. Vesely deduced that peptides were controlling the growth. Applying that thought to petrie dish cancers 97% of all cancers died with 24 hours. In mice, 80% of the deadliest human cancers die within the prescribed treatment period, while the remaining 20% of tumors shrink 90 - 97% — and are managed as a chronic disease.

When Dr. Vesely tried the experiment for the first time, he thought maybe he did something wrong when it worked..but after trying again he knew it was the real deal! After only one month of pumping these hormones under their skin, human pancreatic cancer cells that were growing in the mice were eliminated by more than 80%. Cancer cells were blown apart by the bodies own hormones! Amazing!

Doctors and scientists in the cancer community are fascinated by his findings, yet cautious. One of the concerns of doctors is that sometimes things that work in mice won't in humans. Another concern is that the dose of hormones required to shrink cancer cells in a human body may not have the same effect as it does in mice.

"I think that there's potentially promise here, but I think the real question is whether these very potent hormones will be tolerable at the doses required," said Dr. Mark Ratain from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Vesely has published his findings and when asked if he believed he found the cure for cancer he said "I wouldn't go that far." But he is hopeful, and thinks if it will cure one type of cancer, it could cure them all.  Dr. Vesely, who has received an overwhelming amount of letters and calls from cancer patients and their families (asking when his treatment would become available), is cautious about raising those expectations and that we should not get ahead of ourselves. More funding is needed to continue his research, and the outcry from dying patients has given him a sense of urgency and hope that his research be continued . Money is being raised by Kalos Therapeutics to continue with the human clinical trials .

Are we close to finding the cure??? I think it makes sense how powerful of a role our endocrine system plays in our health. How understanding  hormones, metabolism--the entire endocrine system's role in disease could help scientists make a break in curing this devastating, incurable disease that touch so many of our lives. Cancer has touched the lives of more than a handful of my relatives, both my grandmothers are Breast Cancer Survivors, and I have lost family members to Pancreatic Cancer. Most of my friends and acquaintances have been touched by cancer one way or another. So reading about this research makes me hopeful! I think this is an exciting discovery, and if this is in fact a potentially ground-breaking discovery, I hope they can get the funding they need to continue this research soon! Until then, we can do everything for our own heath that's within our control. Being our own advocates, leading healthy lives, going to the doctors regularly for mole screenings, breast exams, prostate exams, regular check ups, and so on. Also knowing your body, and not ignoring anything that seems "off." Don't become a  hypochondriac, but early detection means an early cure for a lot of cancers. Just be smart about it. I think that if trying to be healthier, not exposing ourselves to toxins, exercising regularly & eliminating stress is all we can do, it wont hurt...and lowering your risk for all the other diseases that obesity, stress and lack of exercise bring on will only UP your quality of life! Cancer is still somewhat of a mystery, I am not saying if you lead a perfectly healthy life you will be immune...although wouldn't you want to try to control (if possible) what happens from what we DO know? Cutting out what doctors and scientist have said puts us at a higher risk? Also, doing more of the things that CAN lower our chances?
