Endangered Species Australia: Preserving the Female Body

Posted Dec 18 2010 5:34pm
I'm very excited to be putting up this first post to tell you all about an exciting international event that Australia is participating in of which I am part of the organising committee - Endangered Species Australia: Preserving the Female Body.

Endangered Species: Preserving the Female Body is an international summit to challenge the toxic culture we live in that is teaching women and girls to criticise and hate their bodies.  An incredible series of summits and events are taking place world wide in all the cities mentioned above in celebration of 100 years of International Women's Day in March 2011.  The campaign will take a different form and focus in every country engaging government, the education sector, corporations, the fashion industry and the mainstream media.  We want to create a new visual culture – one where the diverse, real beauty of women and girls is valued and magnified the world over.

The time is now.
Take back your body.
Re-imagine the world.
Wow!
I'm so excited to be part of the Australian Endangered Species event, the organisation of which is being lead by the Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria (EDF) and Women's Information Referral Exchange (WIRE).  We have come to the party much later than countries like the USA and UK but I'm thrilled we will be marking the event in a small way with a particular focus of online and social media engagement to get you all thinking about how we can be part of positive change in this arena.
The event will take place on March 10th in Melbourne and at this exciting stage of planning will include a presentation on Health at Every Size, feminist comedy, and presentations from entrants of Loved Bodies, Big Ideas which is going to be a big part of this very special day.  Watch out for my call out very soon for YOUR big idea as to what you what believe can bring about change to make Australia a more positive body culture for girls and women.  Want to see change in our curriculum?   Advertising standards?  Clothes sizing?  We want to hear your idea and will be encouraging you to blog, write a Facebook note, submit an essay, photographs, a piece of art - in fact - anything you think conveys your idea.
More details on that very soon.
Love you all to get on board this exciting initiative.
Why?
I think this clip from the UK summit says it all.
Let's be the change.
