Hey everyone
We have been enjoying reading everyone’s thoughts on Insanity and eating before working out. : )
And it got me thinking more about the relationship between eating and exercise. I am the type of person who considers research, but mostly makes my decisions on how I FEEL!!! I think it is important to have some facts, but honestly feel you have to do your own personal research. I learn best from my own personal experiences. Everyone is different, so what works for me may not work for you.
Lori and I used to get up at 5am and go straight to the gym. No eating. We did this for years and looking back we always looked the same!! Our bodies did not change..we did not get stronger, leaner, etc. Now after trail and error, research, and learning from others, we enjoy having something small before our morning workouts. Eating before now allows us to push ourselves harder so we can obtain the results we want! As before, we would run out of energy because we depleted our glycogen, so we could never push ourselves.
It took some time getting used to eating before exercising, but over time we have found what our bodies like. As I mentioned some things yesterday , our pre-workout meals are small, mostly fruit based with some coconut oil, which we feel is the perfect combo for energy.
Yes we eat coconut oil before we workout, and here is why?
- Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids.
- It increases metabolism, removes pancreatic stress, which allows for more energy to be burned by the body.
- Coconut oil promotes healthy enzyme and thyroid functioning and is easy to digest.
- The energy boost from coconut oil further helps athletes perform at their highest levels.
Here are some articles I found to be interesting. Let me know your thoughts.
We learned a lot about pre-workout meals from Brendan Brazier’s book . He believes in fueling your body properly before workouts. If you would like to read more about our thoughts on Brendan’s book please check it out here .
I feel you have to find what works for you because everyone has different digestive systems. Lori and I have weak digestive systems so we have to be careful of what we eat before, as others may have no problem with eating certain foods before exercising. We feel it is all about feeling your best during your workouts!
If you notice you get crappy or have nausea, try keeping a journal of what you eat and how you felt. Overtime you will find what foods work best for you and give you the energy to push through your workouts! From our experiences, when we would not feel our best we started to realize it was not because of the food we just ate before exercising, but instead something the day before, or even a few days before.
Please share your thoughts and views on eating before working out. Do you feel you have to eat in order to get a good workout in? Do you notice a difference when you do or do not eat before hand?
And here is a fun question: what is your favorite go to song when working out?
