Earth Hour goes 'Beyond the Hour' in 2011

Posted Feb 10 2011 12:00am
I am very proud to announce that my boyfriend, Dave, has been nominated for an Earth Hour Award this year, for his efforts in spreading the Earth-saving message through Vegan Era and Path of Simplicity .  What is Earth Hour and what are the Earth Hour Awards?  Well let me tell you...

For the fifth year running, Earth Hour will darken the world for 60 minutes on the 26th March. Created by the Australian arm of World Wildlife Federation (WWF), this campaign sees hundreds of millions of people in 140 countries turn off their lights for one hour to raise awareness about the degradation of the planet and work towards a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.

This year WWF-Australia are asking everyone to go "beyond the hour" to create a more sustainable planet. To recognise people around the country going above and beyond in protecting our beautiful home, they are launching the Earth Hour Awards.  They are searching for inspiring stories from around the country in five categories, so if you, or someone you know, is dedicated to protecting our environment, applications are open now.

The categories are Young Panda Award, Workplace Champion Award, Future Makers Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Education Award and the WWF Earth Hour People's Choice Award.  Voting for the People's Choice Award will commence in March so stay tuned for information about this later.

The winners of each award will be announced at the Earth Hour Awards ceremony in Sydney on March 26.

Check out the website for more information and to apply or nominate someone!  The website is www.earthhour.org.au  .  The application process doesn't take long and it is a fantastic initiative.

You can also follow Earth Hour and view their video about the awards on their facebook page.

If nothing else, make sure you remember to turn off your power at 8.30pm on March 26 to show you care.  It's only an hour - you can handle it!
