Earth-Friendly Festivals

Posted Sep 09 2008 5:31am

Music festivals are a quintessential summer tradition, from Lollapalooza to The Country Music Festival. Since Woodstock, musicians have been in a position to make a huge difference for their cause, whether it be protesting a war or saving the children. People listen to musicians. Which is why recently, music festivals have been going green. Musicians like Incubus and The Fray have been working with environmental organizations like the Natural Resources Defense Council to green their tours, on and off stage. On this year's tour, Incubus has been serving organic food backstage, selling organic cotton T-Shirts, and printing their concert posters on 100% recycled paper with soy ink. Dave Welsh, guitarist for The Fray, bought a guitar from 1966, guaranteeing it's been used before. Willie Nelson and many others on tour are traveling between shows in biodiesel buses.

For festival goers, there are many ways to contribute to the green musical movement:

  • Bring your own reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water at the show
  • Carpool or take public transportation
  • Recycle at the festival -- if there aren't recycling bins, start your own movement to get the venue to invest in some
