Drugs, Eating All Raw, Food Porn & More Recipes.

Posted Jul 03 2011 2:05am

Happy Sunday all!

Lotsa shit to catch up on today so sit back, grab a smoothie (or some raw chocolate, never too early for raw chocolate!) and bear with me (I’ll shower you with food porn after, promise).

I’ve had a pretty rough week. It seemed like my party behaviour of the last few weeks took its toll. I managed to keep myself somewhat going, occupying myself with fun stuff, until Thursday hit. Thursday, it felt like the world world came down on me. I’m not one to use the word depression lightly, but Thursday I felt depressed. I felt like I had no serotonin left in any cell of my body. A big heavy fog came over me and I was unable to lift it, do anything about it. Such a horrible feeling, and it really makes me feel for those who struggle with actual depression. I’m sad to say I felt so down & out that day I binged. And then purged. And repeat. By the end of the day, I was a wreck. My whole body hurt. My face was swollen. I was in a state of panic, even though I knew I would feel better the day after.

I woke up feeling like a train wreck but I was right: mentally I felt better already, and this only got better as the day progressed. Interestingly enough, my mom texted me on Thursday about not feeling well from using drugs the weekend before either. We agreed this was stupid, and not worth it. I’ve never abused drugs but in the last 2 months, I have overdone it a bit. I am thankful though that this has made me realize this is NOT for me. I appreciate ‘normal’ life way too much to let it be affected by a dance-filled day or night. At least, not this often. I’ve decided to sell the tickets I had left for this summers festivals, and only go to one more, which is two months away. After that? Who knows. Can’t say I’m completely done with it yet, but I think I’ll aim for 1 party all fall/winter/spring, and then 1-2 in the summer. It seems like that would a good halfway solotion. I’ve learned my lesson though!

Oh, this also made for me only ‘making’ it to one Bikram class this week (so far, I am doing a class this AM too)! WHUT? Last two weeks I managed to squeeze in 5 classes a week, and I had planned on 5-7 classes this week, HA. Well screw you, drugs. Actually, the joke’s on me but let’s not think about that. Honestly, the first two days my body was to frail (got dizzy standing up lots of times) and after that, I just couldn’t find the mental strength anymore. Yesterdays class was TOUGH on me, but it felt SO good being back! Once you get over the inital hump, it’s all good again.

“The mind is its own place and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven” – John Milton

Anyone familair with that quote? I’ve always loved it. To me it reads something like, mind over matter. And: our own minds are all that are holding us back, ever. We can only be at peace, thrive, once we’ve come to the glorious realization everything around us is just relative. Our own minds make our realities. Love being reminded of that (hmm, another tattoo maybe? Yes! Oi, still need to scrape the money for my third one…)

Ok enough with the depressing rant! Friday also marked the start of my Raw Results journey! I’m not sure what sparked me to think ‘hey let’s celebrate with trying all-raw for a day!” but I did, and it was fun! Actually, I ate all-raw yesterday as well. It’s surprisingly easier than I thought, but probably because I’ve already had periods of eating very high raw, and I didn’t ‘make’ myself do it, I was just excited to try it out for once! And so, it became a fun and effortless ordeal, but it did feel kindof exciting. What I ate? Juices & smoothies, a way too spicy Asian salad (only made it halfway through, burn!), tons & tons of fruit (I need sponsors… and a FA group), random homemade goodies like raw macaroons , zucchini pasta (doh) and some newbies: raw crackers & spreads! Looks like my body is finally adjusting to raw crackers, yay! (They made me nauseous before, just like raw soup, ew). My dehydrator is constantly humming away and I am continuously trying out new stuff. It’s weird, I spend SO much time in the kitchen these days, I love it. I feel so inspired, I feel drawn to my kitchen every day.

Oh & don’t worry, there was raw cacao too in my eats…

Stocking up on fresh organic produce, one of my favorite pastimes ;). This whole lot only set me back €30 (& thats including a bag of nuts & 3 boxes of expensive berries!). See that monster green? I thought I finally located dinosaur kale in Holland (and nearly went into cardiac arrest), but the vendors told me it wasn’t. Apparently it’s black cabbage, but I prefer it’s cool Italian name cavalo nero! Anyone know more about this? If anything, it looks super-duper healthy (& scary..)!

A nifty little solution to storing (some of my) greens! They take up so much space and sometimes the more frail varieties (spinach, Chard) go a bit limp before I can get to them. Let’s see how this goes, it at least saves a lot of space :p (Blokker)

Bubble Butt Cherry!

Picknick in the park with a load of fruit

A lovely meal: pumpkin soup & nacho’s with salsa!

Humongous juice!

Leftover pulp (brimming with fiber!)

Mixed with flax, water & lotsa spice (paprika, cayenne, cumin powder, cumin pepper & mustard seeds. Spic-y!)

Turning it the whole lot into pulp based Cumin Sesame crackers! (recipe below for my raw friends)

More juice ( green lemonade )

Cheese-Onion flax crackers with Omega-3 Pesto (these crackers are quite good, but not good enough to share a recipe yet!)

Spicy Asian Cucumber salad. I dunno what happened, but this salad was so hot I nearly burst into tears :p. The NUTS though, ohh the nuts… Cayenne-Spiked Almonds! (recipe below)

An amazing spread I came up with! I really really love this spread, tastes like the real deal (it’s based on a spread from the health food store I adore but this is a more natural, somewhat more raw version). Bobby upon tasting it: ‘omg! you’re getting really good at this!”. (recipe below)

Weird snack platter. I wasn’t digging anything but I was a little hungry so just threw some stuff on a plate…

Isa did NOT mind gobbling up my leftover spread & avocado, haha. She’s a true carnivore, but she just ADORES avocado. Silly silly Isa.

Cheesy Nacho Dip! (recipe below)

To make cheesey nacho chips! Another awesome raw invention. Have your cake & eat it too ;)

Giving the good old dehydrator a good workout!

Zucchini Linguini with my new sunflower tomato spread, olives, sundried tomatoes & pine nuts. Lush!

And now for some XXX food porn (ages 21 and up..)

Oh. My.

Is that a banana in your purse or are you just happy to see me? (Said in a very sexy Russian accent, of course)

I must have you, cupcake.

I must have all three of you!

Aren’t they the prettiest? These will end up in me e-book for YES, this is actually a SIMPLE recipe.(just a little time-consuming, heh)

Thee Recipes

Cumin Sesame Crackers
Yields 20-25 ~ crackers
* 1 cup tightly packed juice pulp (from veggie juice only)
* 1/4 cup ground flax seeds
* 2 T spicy paprika powder
* 2 t cumin powder
* 3 T mixed cumin, pepper & mustard seeds
* 1 t salt
* water
* sesame seeds

Mix all ingredients except water & sesame seeds in a blender or processor. Pour in a little bit of water at a time to reach desired consistency. It should be thick and spreadable and just a little sticky.

Flatten out on a teflex dehydrator sheet and sprinkle with sesame seeds (press them in a little). Carefullt score into crackers. Dehydrate (I do 105 F) until crispy, turn, break crackers and dehydrate other side until really thin and crispy (on mesh dehydrator sheet). Let cool and store airtight.

Cayenne-Spiked Almonds
Yields one cup
* one cup almonds (I use soaked and patted-dry)
* 2 T agave
* 1 T sucanat
* 3-5 T cayenne powder (depending on how spicy you look them)

In a bowl toss the almonds with the other ingredients and mix to combine well.
Raw almonds: dehydrate for 24hrs on 105-115 F (turning once)
Baked almonds: bake on 180 C / 375 F for 15 minutes

These have quite the kick! A great way to jazz up almonds, and they make for a great crowd pleaser!

Sunflower Tomato Spread
Yields ~ 3.5 cups
* 1 cup sunflower seeds, soaked for at least one hour
* 1/4 cup water (60 ml)
* juice of half a lemon
* 2 packed cups sundried tomatoes (I used the oil&spice based kind)
* 10 cherry tomatoes (optional)
* 2 T extra virgin olive oil
* 3/4 t salt
* 1/2 t garlic
* 3 -4 T agave
* optional: 1/2 t guar gum

Mix everything together in blender or food processor. This make quite a big batch so you might want to start with half the recipe (unless you can share!). Great on bread/sandwiches, crackers, as a veggie dip, in wraps, etc.

Cheesy Nacho Dip
Yields ~ 1.5 cups
* 1 cup cashews
* 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
* 2 T paprika powder
* 2 T garlic powder
* 1 T smoke powder (optional)
* 2 T agave (or other sweetener)
* 1/4 – 1/3 cup water (60-80 ml)

Throw all ingredients in food processor and mix. I like to leave the cashews chunky for some texture. If you’d like a smooth dip, process cashews first and then add rest of ingredients. Add water as you go along to thin out, and see how thick you like it.

Great party dip (or to make kale chips!), the yeast gives this a really cheesy flavor and I always love the combination of strong, spicy flavors (paprika, garlic, smoke powder) and a hint of sweetness! I bet this would taste great in wraps or taco’s too.
