There is a tradition here in Bulgaria, dating from an ancient times to drive & scare the evil spirits away when the new year comes. On that day all the elders (and sometimes kids) put on their scariest masks and lots of bells & clappers and stroll the streets to scare away everything that is evil. The devastating noises from the clappers can silent you down for hours and the wild dances of the mummers are truly something to remember!
2000 mummers came to this year’s masquerade games from all over the world – Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Indonesia, Macedonia… And me and some friends went there to watch and take photos. It was an amazing experience! So many people gathered together, some of them angry, others happy, lots of them drunk (but that’s another story, it was freezing cold out there).
At some point we went to see the entrance of the mummers where there were no restrictive ropes dividing the visitors with the participants. One of the ensembles circled 3 of us and started dancing around and coming closer and closer! It was breathtaking! I surely can say they scared all my evils away! A memory that will last forever!
P.S. After seeing some of the costumes I finally figured out where Karl Lagerfeld got his inspiration for the 2010 Chanel collection :)
