Dorset Cereals Part Two

Here is part two of my Dorset Cereals review; porridge, granola and muesli! (I reviewed their bars here )

First up, Cranberry and Raspberry Fruity porridge

Ingredients
British porridge oats (72%), sultanas (17%), raspberry flavoured porridge oats (porridge oats, natural flavouring), sweetened dried cranberries (3%) (cane sugar, cranberries, sunflower oil), freeze dried raspberries (1%)

Wow - what a super thick and creamy texture! It tastes so decedent, such a change from any other instant porridge I've had before. Lovely taste too, with the sharpness of raspberries complementing the milder taste of the other fruits. It even has little raspberry seeds it :)

Next, Apple and Raisin Porridge

Ingredients

First impressions of this - I love all the bits of apple and raisins! I often add raisins to my porridge anyway so really like the inclusion of this. Super easy to make, just bung it in a pan with 125ml of milk and heat. It looked so thick and creamy - noticeably more creamy then the usual porridge I make.

I dug in and the texture was SO thick and luxurious! And it tasted super creamy like it had been made with full fat milk or cream. (I did in fact used lactose free semi skimmed!) The taste was delicious though next time I would probably chuck in some cinnamon which would really complement the flavour. This was great and a lot better than the usual Oats so Simple or other instant oats that I normally have.

Next, Super High Fibre cereal

Ingredients
Toasted and malted wheat flakes (wheat, malt), Chilean flame raisins (27%), toasted and malted oat flakes (oats, malt), dates (8%), sunflower seeds (6%), toasted coconut (5.5%), dried apricots (2.5%) (apricots, preservative: sulphur dioxide), roasted hazelnuts (1%).

"Although variety is the spice of life, there are times when routine can be a welcome relief. Like buying the Sunday papers, walking the dog, or a bowl of our Super High Fibre, which we eat as regularly as clockwork. Super High Fibre is a really delicious blend of toasted cereals with juicy Chilean flame raisins, dates, sunflower seeds, toasted coconut, apricots and roasted hazelnuts. Simple, but then the best things in life usually are."


Yum, this smelt very coconutty and looks really appealing, chock full of flakes. It has a very crunchy texture, with a nutty flaky flavour and nice big bits of fruit. It has lots of flavour in every bit and takes a lot of chewing! This is one of my favourites of the Dorsets - I will certainly buy this in the future.

Next, Honey Granola

Ingredients
Oats (35%), honey (15%), sunflower seeds (9%), blanched flaked almonds (8%), rye flakes (8%), grape seed oil, pecans (7%), pumpkin seeds (7%), natural vanilla extract, salt.

"Our Honey Granola is a wonderful recipe of oats, sunflower seeds, flaked almonds, rye flakes, pecans and pumpkin seeds gently baked in honey and grape seed oil with just a hint of vanilla. Simple, but then the best things in life usually are."

I forgot to take a piccie of this in the bowl - I must have been too eager to dive in I guess!

This looked really tempting, jam packed with whole seeds and pecan pieces. This had a prominant seed flavour and texture and the pecans are lovely. It doesn't taste as oaty as other granolas I've tried, and the honey taste isn't very strong at all, I could just detect a nice creamy sweetness. The granola keeps a good crunch and doesnt go soggy at all (nothing worse than a horrible soggy cereal!) and because it contains no dried fruit is ideal for all you dried fruit haters - like my Mam!

Next one, Berries and Cherries cereal

Raisins (16%), sultanas (16%), chilean flame raisins (14%), blackcurrant flavour barley flakes (barley, sugar, blackcurrant flavouring, fruit and vegetable concentrate (blackcurrant, black carrot)), oat flakes, wheat flakes, toasted and malted wheat flakes (wheat, malt), barley flakes, sweetened dried cranberries (1.5%) (sugar, cranberries, sunflower oil), sweetened dried blueberries (1%) (blueberries, sugar, vegetable oil), freeze dried cherries (0.5%), freeze dried blackcurrants (0.5%), freeze dried raspberries (0.5%).

"Some people say that life’s not a bowl of cherries – we’d have to disagree. Living in Dorset has inspired us to add loads of tangy, juicy berries to our bowl, creating this delicious recipe. Berries & Cherries is a tangy mix of berries including raspberries, blackcurrants, cranberries, blueberries and cherries with chilean flame raisins, sultanas and cereals. "


I love anything with raisin and sultanas so was really looking forward to diving into this! And all that fruit in the bowl looked really tempting. I love the different variety of flakes in this cereal which have a lovely flavour, texture and crunch. It tastes very fruity but not 'sugary' or too sweet. The variety of fruit is nice and the blueberries add tartness.

Next up, Simply Fruity muesli

Barley flakes, oat flakes, wheat flakes, sultanas (14%), sweetened dried papaya (10%) (sugar, papaya, preservative: sulphur dioxide), sweetened dried pineapple (5%) (sugar, pineapple, citric acid, preservative: sulphur dioxide), raisins (5%), toasted and malted wheat flakes (wheat, barley malt extract), chilean flame raisins (4%).

Raisins in a cereal of any kind in my book is ALWAYS good, and after spotting loads in my bowl I knew this cereal would be tasty :) The papaya and pineapple add a fab tropical feel and like the other mueslis, the different types of flakes add taste and variety. This has less crunch than the the cereals though so I didn't enjoy the texture quite as much.

On to the next, Simply Delicious Muesli

Ingredients

Ooh, I could see massive bits of fruit, especially huge raisins, in the box! This also has the welcome addition of seeds and nuts and has a good all round flavour combination. The different variety of flakes again is good, but I would prefer more crunch. This is nice but not all that memorable.

Next one, Really Nutty Muesli

Chilean flame raisins (19%), toasted and malted wheat flakes (wheat, malt), barley flakes, oat flakes, wheat flakes, dried apricots (6%) (apricots, preservative: sulphur dioxide), cashew nuts (5%), dates (5%), toasted and malted oat flakes (oat flakes, malt), Brazil nuts (3%), roasted hazelnuts (1%), whole almonds (1%).

"Some habits in life simply make sense for no apparent reason. Like shaking hands, saying good morning and apologising when other people bump into you. We feel the same about this recipe. It just seems like good sense, but then we are biased… nuts almost, which is why we’ve included four types of nuts in this muesli. Really Nutty Muesli is a crunchy mix of cashews, brazils, hazelnuts and almonds with apricots, dates, Chilean flame raisins and multi-grain flakes."

I was expecting this to be super crunchy with al the nuts, but was suprised to find it had a pretty soft texture :( The cashew nuts are really noticeable in this, wish is fab as they are one of my favourite nuts.And it has those super big raisins again! But alas, I need more CRUNCH!

And last but not least, Tasty Toasted Spelt, Barley and Oat Flakes

"We have just discovered these toasted and malted spelt flakes. They are not only deliciously light, crunchy and nutty, they’re also high in fibre. A 7,000-year-old distant cousin of modern wheat, spelt has a fragile gluten structure that is more water soluble than modern wheat making it easier to digest. Ideal for anyone wishing to eat less wheat. With a delicious blend of dates, sultanas, Chilean flame raisins, juicy pineapple, pumpkin seeds, roasted hazelnuts and almonds."


I've saved the best til last! This is my favourite of the lot, wonderful flavour and texture (crunchy!) and very different to all the others. The spelt tasted a bit like cornflakes and is really lovely. It is fruity, nutty and seedy and I will definitely be buying this!

I feel like I've been on a lovely breakfast adventure the last few weeks thanks to Dorset, and have really enjoyed the opportunity to try so many of their products. Muesli, porridge and granola are like breakfast heaven to me, and if you're a fan of a brekkie like that I'd say certainly give Dorset a try. There is pretty much something to suit everyone's tastes - fruity, nutty, seedy, oaty or a combo of them all.
The nutritional breakdowns are good (though some do have added sugar, not that it would stop me eating them, just something to be mindful of) and the oats, seeds, fruits etc are healthy little gems of goodness. And I remember the days when muesli used to taste, quite frankly, one step up from dust but companys like Dorset have really made cereals tasty and interesting!

They can be bought from most supermarkets and online via the website . The also stock lots of variants that I've not reviewed, including the very intriguing sounding marmalade granola!
