< p>Each nighttime while visiting the restaurans in Ismir, we came across a small restaurant and the manager attempted to tempt us to eat there. Each night we listened to his tale and browsed at the presentation but chose to keep looking. Then, on our second last night in Ismir, we succumbed. We dined at the cafe. That was a HUGE MISTAKE!
The meal was quite nice and the service very excellent. As my wife and I finshed our meal , we sat lazily in our chairs and consumed our drinks. I noticed that a young American couple had ordered the same dish as I did, adana kebap. I wonder if they suffered the same fate as I did?
Anyway, we were searching around the cafe and noticed the very huge wood-fired oven, much like a pizza oven. The waiter arrived to collect our dishes and my wife questioned about the oven. He said that they used the oven in the mornings to cook all the meals and then they place the completed meals in the refrigerators at the front of the cafe. I thought nothing of it but my wife was very surprised. In fact she broughtit up in conversation as we walked back to our room. That’s not where it finished…
That night, I awoke at about 1am with a very sore headache and was perspiring profusely. Within minutes I was stop dead cold and shivering profusely. Then it struck – the dreaded diarrhea!
We were plotting to travel to one of the local attractions the next day but I was not anywhere well enough to go. The guide was due to collect us at 8am and I questioned my wife to go solo. I was so ill; there was no way I could leave my room. So she left for the day and I lay there thinking I was going to die. Then an incredible thing happened.
Our hotel proprieter visited in the morning. My wife had clarified the situation and that I was unwell and not to distress about servicing the room that day. Anyway, he brought with him a small plate of red grapes and a huge bowl of yoghurt. Anyone who has visited Turkey will know that the locals eat a huge quantities of yoghurt!. He clarified thet the yoghurt would fix all my stomach issues. I did not really feel like eating at all but made a token effort and place the dish next to my bed after he left once he had left. Then I remembered something vital…
I have been writing about probiotics and the merits of taking probiotic capsules for many years ! These “friendly bacteria” are excellent for the stomach. With 2 days of bus travel coming up , there was no way I wanted to be embarrased with a loss of control in public ! So I ate the yoghurt.
The next day I was on the mend and although still suffering a stomach ache , was able to resume my journey. I had my fill of natutal probiotic supplement in the form of yoghurt again for breakfast and was on the mend.
The lesson I have learned from this terrible experience is that probiotics are a wonderful preventative measure and I will never travel to a another country without a bottle of probiotics supplements on hand. You just never know how vital they may turn out to be!
