Do Not Let Your Problems Define You!

Posted Feb 05 2011 10:26pm

Acceptance!  Getting to the point of accepting weaknesses, problems and the negatives in life is so important but difficult to do.  Usually when we talk about acceptance, we talk about breaking denial.  Humans have a way of knowing things superficially and failing to actualize or achieve what we know we should.  This is denial.

We must break denial in order to find acceptance.  Alcoholics must break the denial about their drinking in order to enter recovery.  People with illnesses and injuries, often times, live in denial and make their conditions worse.  Sometimes we must accept what we do not want to accept.

What happens when we finally accept what we do not want to accept.  We can allow our lives to continue as normally as we can or we can allow our problems to define our lives.

Acceptance means not allowing our problems to define our lives!

I have a permanently broken arm.  At first I was devastated by the news.  Over time, I know that I have a broken arm, but I am not a broken person.

The goal in life is to accept what is broken in our lives and not conclude that we are broken.

How many times have you seen people with chronic back conditions, severe heart attacks, diabetes or a psychiatric diagnosis give up?  Frank is no longer Frank with his normal feelings thoughts goals and relationships.  Frank becomes Frank with a heart condition. And in this instance, the heart condition now determines and defines Frank's life.

Acceptance means owning a problem and managing the problem within the context of our daily living. True acceptance of a problem means that we do not allow the problems to define our lives or our identities.  We are not in acceptance of a problem, if the problem is destroying our past identity and completely redefining who we are.

We must learn to accept problems as problems and not as new identities.

Remember, We Live within the Lives Created by Our Choices!
