In case you weren’t aware, November is American Diabetes Month. Nearly 26 million kids and adults are living with diabetes in the country, and 79 million people are are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association .

Here are some interesting statistic on the ADA’s website from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention :

  • Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes.
  • Diabetes kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined.
  • Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.

Now that you are aware of the impact of diabetes on Americans, please get involved in the fight against diabetes this month. Find out how you can get involved by locating your local American Diabetes Association office .

Also, a new book was released by the Mayo Clinic that aims to help people with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes lose weight and curb their blood sugar. The book,  The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet , comes from the creators of the No. 1 New York Times Bestseller, The Mayo Clinic Diet.

The book has two easy-to-follow phases Lose It! and Live It!  The diet is based on principles of The Mayo Clinic Diet, which aims to help people safely lose six to 10 pounds in two weeks, and then continue to lose weight until they achieve a healthy weight they can maintain for life.

The Lose It! phase of The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet is a two-week plan that encourages quick but safe weight loss that can help lower blood sugar. The Live It! phase of the diet offers basic and manageable steps and lifestyle changes and choices that are designed to help participants lose one to two pounds a week until a healthy weight is reached, and then keep the pounds off.

The book is packed with meal plans, practical solutions and specific tips on how to improve health and lose weight safely. The Mayo Clinic Diabetes Diet tackles all the familiar obstacles that get in the way of weight loss, such as dislike of exercise and healthy food, too little time to cook well, a hectic schedule, struggle with cravings, and lack of support.

If you, a family member or a friend has pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, pick up a copy of this book. Also, be sure to get involved in your community this month to raise money and awareness.
