Decisions. Decisions.

Posted Feb 05 2013 11:45pm

Remember a few weeks ago when I was having trouble deciding which half marathon to register for ? I finally made a decision! Well, kind of.

broad street 10 miler lottery

I decided to enter the lottery for the Broad Street 10 miler in Philadelphia in May. Honestly, I was a little worried about running a half marathon this spring. My body has just been achy and not exactly feeling 100%. I thought that this would be a good distance to build up to and race.

Of course, the organizers of the Broad Street Run decided to make my life a little bit more difficult by instituting a lottery this year. Oh well. I’ll find out if I will run or not after February 15th. My plan is then to train for and run a half marathon in the fall – either the Philadelphia Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon or Gretes Great Gallop in Central Park.

There’s been another decision that’s been weighing on my mind. Towards the end of last year, I knew in my heart and mind that I wanted to do Yoga Teacher Training .

Most people seem to have their yoga home and end up doing their training at that studio. However, my yoga home in Brooklyn doesn’t offer a teacher training program so I was left to look elsewhere. I’ve been spending a lot of time researching programs here in New York City and outside of the city. I would get really excited about a program only to have major reservations a few days later. I couldn’t decide.

There was a part of me that just wanted to pick a program and just do it because I had it set in my mind that I was going to do my training this year. I was evaluating the programs based on their schedule instead of whether or not the program was a good fit for me.

Finally, I had a conversation with one of my favorite teachers after class one day. We talked a bit about why I wanted to do yoga teacher training and what I hoped to get out of it. She suggested that I look into another studio in Tribeca where most of the instructors at my studio actually practice, teach and received their advanced training.

half handstand

Working to prep my body for handstand.

I’ve practiced at this studio before and loved the vibe. I just don’t get there that often because it’s more convenient to walk 6 blocks versus take the train to Tribeca. But I started looking into their program some more and I started attending classes. You know what? It fits and I want to do my teacher training with them.

But here’s the catch – their next teacher training isn’t until January 2014, almost a year from now. Also, I have to be able to do a headstand in the middle of the room as well as a handstand and forearm stand either in the middle of the room or assisted by the wall.

Hmmm, we all know how I feel about inversions . So maybe it’s a good thing that the program doesn’t start for a year? I have a full year to build my confidence and work on my inversions.

Phew. I feel so much better having more clarity around these two decisions. I know that they aren’t life altering or anything like that but I felt like I had a hard time planning out the rest of my year without these two big chunks plugged into my calendar.

Have you run the Broad Street 10 Miler or Grete’s Gallop? Do you feel the need to settle your calendar or is it just me?
