Day Trip to Sedona

Posted Sep 11 2009 4:54pm
Hey loves,

First, I have to say Happy Birthday to my dad. We "celebrated" by taking a 2+ hour drive to Sedona, Arizona. Though the drive wasn't fun, Sedona was really pretty. But you'll see it soon! First, I had a delicious breakfast this morning:

Greek yogurt, pumpkin, TJ's blueberry mini bran muffin, sliced banana, cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa powder, and a spoon of white chocolate wonderful pb.

I loved having both the banana slices and the muffin! It was a flavor explosion party in my mouth.

After breakfast, we headed over to my apartment to drop off some things and hit the road for Sedona. The scenery on the drive was really pretty:

Even though we got stuck in some crawling traffic:

I had about 1000 grapes:

There was also a lot of this involved:

The sun was beating down on me through the window and turning my leg red! I had to keep applying sunscreen like crazy.
We finally got to the visitor's center, got a day pass, and had lunch on the porch.

I had a sandwich with some almond "cheese"

It was my first time trying this almond cheese, and I really liked it! It didn't have a weird aftertaste, just a nutty flavor which I liked. I could definitely taste the garlic in it.

I also had more of it on a kamut puffed cake:

And some raw Trader Joe's green and yellow beans:

We drove around Sedona and stopped at various scenic viewpoints to get out and take pictures. It was too hot to walk very far without feeling like I was about to pass out. Here are some pictures:

"Poisonous Snakes and Insects Inhabit the Area." Yikes!

Eek!

I love this awesome tree:

I took some pictures with my dad's super snazzy camera and he got some really good ones, too. We don't have the connector cord for his camera here, so I'll upload some good ones when I get back. There are some cute ones of my sis and I, too! Here's a picture of me holding his tricked-out camera:

Sweet, huh?

We decided to follow the road into the tip of Flagstaff before turning around to go back. The scenery changed to this:

And this:

Dude, this is my sort of place! Why can't ASU be in Flagstaff? Look at the temperature:

89 degrees! That's pretty much ice cold! We walked around some, then got back in the car and headed back to Phoenix. Unfortunately, the temperature climbed back to this:

114. Bleh.

I wasn't all that hungry for dinner, so I had kamut puff cakes with goat cheese, smoked salmon, and dill.

I also had a bowl of pumpkin, cinnamon, unsweetened coconut, and carob chips.

Ok guys, I actually poured lettuce and spinach into a bowl, stared at it, and put it back in the bag. I just wasn't feelin the salad today. Maybe the heat is getting to me? So strange! The change of major thing is also really stressing me out, and I was glad when we were able to get to the hotel gym for 45 minutes before it closed.

At the gym, I ran on the whacked-out treadmill. This thing is seriously out of calibration. When it says you're walking at 3.0, it's really more like 4.2 or something. When I put it at 6.0 to run, the display kept switching back between 4.9-5.1, while I was really running something like 8 minute miles--or faster! I ended up turning it down to maybe an 8:30-8:50 pace, and ran for 30 minutes. Then I went on the elliptical for 15 minutes. I felt better after I came back and took a shower.

Tomorrow we're going back to Michigan! I've gotta be ready for my mattress to be delivered anytime between 8-12, and then my mom and I are renting a minivan zipcar for 2 hours to move my harp from the music school to my apartment. We leave for the airport around 3, and then don't get back to Michigan until around 1am Michigan time (3 hour time diff).

I have to say, I'm looking forward to coming back to Michigan's "reasonable" temps! I'll be there for 3 weeks before I leave to come back to Arizona for school. Those 3 weeks are going to be golden though--there is no way I can survive any more of the brutal summer than I have to!

Q: When you're on vacation or traveling for business, how do you get in your workouts? Do you hit up the hotel gym, do outdoor activities, get a day/week pass for another gym, or just not workout for the duration?

We almost always try to get a hotel with a fitness center and a pool. Even when the hotel gyms are really dinky, I can pretty much always get some kind of workout in. If that fails, I'll do floor exercises in the hotel room.

I also love active vacations, like our trip to the Smoky Mountains where we spent the days hiking and went white water rafting. So fun! I don't worry about "training" during vacations, but I always feel so much better when I can move my body and get a decent workout in. What about you?
