Danger,Danger - Our Food System

Posted Oct 07 2008 7:19pm

Remember the robot from the TV show Lost In Space, he would alert Will and his family if there was danger ahead, well our robot friend would yelling danger, danger Will, don't eat the food!  How did we allow our food system to become a danger to our health.  One word"TRADE".We have allowed food from other countries into our food system and the worse part we do not inspect the food or I should say we do not have enough man power to inspect the food.
In the last year we discovered  that an industrial chemical was found in our animal and pet food. What country did we receive this wonderful product from
China. The big problem is globalization of our food system without global regulations.  There is no global organization overseeing the world's food system.  You can say we put the cart before the horse in this situation.
In 2006 U.S. imported $10 billion more than exporting in food, beverages and feed. There are 175 different countries that import their products to our nation, which has resulted in a 60% increase in the last decade. If we operated a business like this, we would be out of business.  What ever happen to planning.  Some how the words planning and organizing are not in the government's vocabulary.
The U S has developed a industrial food model that is driven by trade. Our farm policy encourages mass production with a small group of farmers who have cheap crops that are used for food ingredients, animal feed and exports. On the other hand our Trade policy has aggressively push for global food trade. The most important component of a food plan should be to produce healthy food to feed our people.  That component is missing in our government's plan.
It's unfortunate that we treat our food system in our trade market as if we are dealing with computers. Our system is cracking; we have a loss of family farms, decline in soil and water quality and a serious problem with food related health issues "OBESITY".
Consumers need to voice their opinions and most of all use their buying power to bring about change in our food system.  We need to demand an increase in food safety in a global world and organic or all natural foods.  If we do not demand change our health will suffer.  Without good health we have nothing!
