Asian Tofu Salad with Summer Veggies

It’s relentlessly hot down here in South Carolina. I’m just minutes away from purchasing an above ground pool just to maintain sanity. But in all seriousness, it’s about to break 100 degrees in June.

But in fact, there’s more to keeping cool than turning the AC down. In fact, the foods that you eat make a huge impact on how hot you feel. It’s easy to think that this only refers to the temperature of the food. It’s actually more than just the temp that serves to heat you up and cool you down.

The ancient Science of Ayurveda says that it’s important to cool down the Pitta dosha come summer time. Composed of fire and water, Pitta dosha governs metabolism and transformation in the body, namely digestion. Pitta can be especially felt during the hot summer. The best way to pacify the pitta dosha is to enjoy sweet, astrigent, and bitter tastes and avoid spicy and salty foods.

Green Tips for Cooling Down with Your Diet.

1. Drink lots of room temperature or cool water. Ice cold water actually slows down the body’s digestion.

2. Milk, butter, and especially ghee are cooling foods. I wrote about ghee last week .

3. Eat sweet, fully ripe fruits like melons, cherries, grapes, pears, and mangoes. Try a mango lassi with mango and coconut milk.

4. Minimize spicy foods in your diet.

And limit your time in the hot sun. Cheers to summer!
