chia seeds

Its time for our weekly "benefits of" post.
chia seeds!!!! Thats right. Chia, just like what is in the chia pets. These are tiny little seeds that are gaining more and more popularity due to all the amazing health benefits that go along with eating them. Chia seeds are a nutrient dense food that go back as far as the ancient aztecs and was a staple of their diet. Here are just a few of the benefits of daily consumption of the chia!

~Hydrophilic properties: prolongs hydration in body, makes it helpful during any endurance type of event
~highly soluble fiber content
~high in protein
~they are easy to digest as is, no need to grind up like flax seeds
~Aids proper function of the intestinal tract
~FULL of micronutrients such as Vitamins B and C, boron, calcium, iron and potassium
~best plant source for Omega-3's
~highly absorbable amino acids
~natural linoleic acid
~stabilizes blood sugar
~gives sustained energy boost
~can be added to anything, oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, chili, baked goods....
~can be stored for a long time with out going rancid.

I have taken to adding them to my smoothies and oatmeal. I haven't noticed any particular taste or even a crunch so its nothing scary, yet very beneficial.
Give them a try and let me know what you think
