Can Green Tea Really Help You Lose Weight?

green tea

green tea Follow Me on Pinterest Many people are looking for natural remedies to lose weight. New studies have shown that green tea may be an effective weight loss drink. Many experts claim that you should consider incorporating it into your diet to stimulate your metabolism. However, more research will be needed to confirm how effective it is and whether it should be a long-term weight loss aid.

Evidence Showing Green Tea Can Lead to Weight Loss The International Journal of Obesity published a study in 2000 that found that people who drink green tea regularly can increase their metabolism. Many participants in the study burned fat and calories more quickly, which in turn helped them lose weight.

The study found that the caffeine in green tea increased metabolism in two ways:

  • It increased body heat.
  • It increased energy expenditures.
  • The caffeine in green tea alone was enough to help many people lose weight more quickly. However, green tea also has ephedrine, which is a stimulant and appetite suppressant. This chemical increases heart rate and blood pressure, which helps increase metabolism as well.

There are a number of other compounds in green tea that help increase metabolism through a process known as thermogenesis. One study found that thermogenesis in most drinkers increased by more than 75% after drinking green tea. Although caffeine and ephedrine contributed to that process, they couldn’t account for the change on their own. Therefore, drinking green tea has been found to facilitate weight loss better than coffee and other drinks that are rich in caffeine or ephedrine.

Research is Still Inconclusive Although green tea has been shown to increase thermogenesis, experts are still trying to determine how much it really contributes to weight loss. According to one expert, thermogenesis only accounts for a small amount of weight loss.

The research is inconclusive so far. Many studies have found that green tea extracts help rats and other mammals burn calories and fatty tissues. However, those studies may not be directly applicable to people. More studies will need to be conducted to determine how much green tea leads to weight loss in humans.

Even though the evidence is still lacking on just how much green tea contributes to weight loss, many diets encourage people to drink it regularly. Some health experts advocating the renal diet suggest that people should drink green tea with every meal they eat.

Experts caution against reading too much into these studies. They argue that even if green tea diets can help people lose weight, they will still need to maintain a calorie deficit. You will still need to exercise and follow a strict diet if you want to lose weight.

People drinking green tea also need to be aware of the possible health risks. Consuming it too often can lead to hypertension and heart problems. Make sure you consult with your doctor before you try any dietary or weight loss program, especially if you suffer from heart disease, diabetes or poor circulation problems.
