Hi everyone,
Hope you're having a lovely day so far! I'm having a lovely one in good Ol' Michigan, even though I got a late start. Hey, it was only 8am Arizona time! Ha. My breakfast contained a new vitatop--the Golden Corn one. Truthfully, I've been hesitant to try these because I didn't think I'd like them all that much. But since it was the only muffin-y type product left in the house, I decided to give it a shot.

Greek yogurt
Golden Corn Vitatop
TJ's Freeze-dried banana slices
Cinnamon
Unsweetened cocoa powder
Carob chips
Pinch of unsweetened coconut
Spoon of dark chocolate dreams
I used the freeze-dried banana slices because our bananas weren't ripe enough yet. They were pretty good, except they had a kinda weird over-powering banana aftertaste. They're good in a pinch, though.
The golden corn vita wasn't bad. It wasn't all that stellar, but I'm not a huge fan of corn muffins. I tried some by itself, and it was alright. Tasted kinda like cornbread in muffin form. In the parfait, the vita flavor kinda just disappeared into the woodwork. I did like the texture, though. I bet the Golden Corn vitatop would be good plain with some jam, pb, or fresh fruit. Or butter I guess, if you're goin' for the cornbread thing.
So basically, it wasn't as bad as I thought, but it wasn't all that great. If you love corn muffins, you'd probably like it, though.
Even though the vita wasn't amazing, my parfait was still yummy!
Alright, I got a great question from
Lori yesterday that I really want to answer. She said:
"Nice run! Do you really only burn 390 calories for a 6-mile run? That seems low."
Yep, it's true. And yes, it is a very low number compared to most. Since I'm
only 4'11 and have a small amount of body mass, it doesn't take as much energy (calories) to move my body over a set period of distance. Like in
physics: energy spent is related to mass and distance. Someone who is taller and weighs more than me would burn much more calories running that same distance. I only burn about
65 calories per mile, while someone bigger than me would easily burn much more. Of course, running economy, gender and genetics also come into play, but body mass + distance are key factors.
This is also why I don't need to ingest a lot of calories to "recover" from a run, since my body
isn't expending as much energy. Normal healthy, balanced meals/snacks with a bit of a bigger portion size usually work for me. Even on a 10 mile run, I only burn about 650 calories. Of course, this doesn't factor in afterburn (calories burned while your heartrate is still elevated after working out) and everything, but it's a reason why I don't drink protein shakes and take in a lot of extra calories. On long run days I definitely give extra thought about how to refuel to aid my body's recovery, though.
Everyone is different, and that's great if you burn more calories working out--I have to say I'm a little jealous ;) But this is the body I have, and I like to think of myself as a teeny lil
powerhouse! Ha! It can sometimes make me feel better when I get
frustrated at how many calories other people can burn during a workout. I do love the body I have, and instead I focus on
fitness goals instead of focusing on calories burned. Instead of thinking "I have to burn X many calories," I think about goals like speed, distance, time-- and races. Much more fun :)
Thanks for the question, Lori! I'm really glad to be able to address it. I did add in the calories burned number to kinda show
why I didn't need to have a huge refueling meal, so thanks for the opportunity to talk about it :)
Alright guys, I'm off to do some errands, read blogs, and probably hit the gym later today. I'm not very sore from running, so I'd like to do some low-impact cardio, PT exercises, and abs. Have a great day, everyone!
Q: What's your favorite non-gym form of exercise? I love running outside, but I also love figure skating. I used to be a competitive horseback rider, and that could definitely be a workout! I also love going hiking, like when my family took a vacation to the Smoky Mountains. The hikes were so cool! What about you?
